These butterflies are something that I have made for as long as I can remember. My family and I would make these after dying Easter eggs, since there would be a colorful paper towel from getting leftover dye off your hands and eggs. :) This is how I recreate them any time of the year with watercolor paint!

Supplies

  • Paper Towel (Any size)
  • Newspaper, Optional (To catch extra water)
  • Jar/Bowl of Water
  • Paintbrush
  • Watercolor paint (Mine are leftover from virtual learning)
  • Close pin

Prepare Your Paint

Wet your watercolors with a drop or two of water from your paintbrush. We want there to be a puddle of water on top of the paint. Do this for all the colors you will use.

If you have newspaper, put that under your paper towel to catch extra water from getting on your surface. Use your paintbrush to make strokes on your paper towel. Experiment mixing different colors, using more/less water, or leaving parts white to get what you want. Let this dry. (Tip: You can use a fan or hairdryer to speed up this process.)

Now that your paper towel is dry, rip/cut it to be a rectangle if it wasn’t already. Fold that rectangle in half to make a small square. (By folding it, you will get more dimension then just a square.) Cinch the middle, and clip it with the close pin. Adjust the wings to your liking, and you are done! :)
