2020 Coronavirus Tree Ornament

Commemorate an unforgettable year with this simple craft that you can safely share with your friends and family!

These ornaments are inexpensive, simple, and fun to make. (no masks required)

• sweet gum ball
• white paint
• eyepin
• small jump-ring
• glue or Mod Podge
• glitter
• orange paint (optional)
• drill (1/16 bit)
• jewelry pliers
• nippers or scissor

The first step is to paint the sweet gum ball white. I used house paint, but acrylic paint would work too. (I tried spray paint, but I found it didn't provide enough coverage.) Dip the sweet gum ball in paint or use a brush. I find a combination of both techniques works best for even coverage that isn't too thick. Once covered, leave it to dry thoroughly.

Once the paint is dry, trim the stem from the ball.

Spread the glue out into a thin blob and gently roll the sweet gum ball through the Mod Podge (or any white glue) to cover the tips. (I like to tint mine with orange paint, but that's optional.)

Pour some red glitter into a small box or paper bowl. Gently place the ornament in the glitter while the glue is still wet and roll it around until all the points are coated. Once covered, put it aside to dry.

While the ornament is drying, attach the eyepin to the split ring. I added some 2020 charms, but those are optional.

Use a drill to make a deep hole in the sweet gum ball. (They're surprisingly hard on the inside!) Coat the eyepin in glue and place in the hole. Allow the glue time to dry.

Add a hook and spread some cheer!
