5 + 2 Step Turban Headband

When the cold hits and a hat won't do, a headband will! This one stitch, cushy headband will work up quickly and be a pleasure to wear indoors and out! Scrunch it up and stuff it in your pocket and go,...

4 oz. ball of worsted weight yarn (cotton, acrylic, wool or blend) which will make 2 headbands, crochet hook sz.H, yarn needle, scissors

Using sz. H hook and yarn, chain 85 stitches (sts) for headband rectangle. Adjust number of beginning sts. to your head size.

In second chain and each chain across make a half double crochet (great instructions on Youtube for this stitch), chain1, turn

Continue making a half double crochet in each front bar of the previous row's stitches for 20 rows. There now should be 5 ridges on each side of this large rectangle. Finish off, leaving a log tail for later seaming. {The extra rows and a crochet stitch done in the bottom third of each half double crochet gives the fabric a soft, full and squishy feel. It also adds warmth and body to the headband.}

Fold large rectangle in half. Interlock both ends together, per images, leaving a small hole at each end (for turning). Sew the four center sides of the ends together securely, leaving side holes open. Fasten off but do not cut yarn, leaving a length for further seaming.

Invert headband to right side and sew open holes over previous seaming in Step 4, using long end of yarn. If you are happy with what you see, you're finished! Wear and enjoy!

If you would like to make a tab to cover the "knot" in the finished turban, chain 8 stitches. Half double crochet in 2nd chain and across (7 stitches). Continue in pattern as you did for headband until there are 7 ridges on each side of tab, as per photo. Finish off, set aside with a long tail for seaming.

Using the TAB made in Step 6, fold it over the knot of the headband and to the wrong side. With yarn end, sew the ends (7 sts) of the tab together. Tack it down a few times to the headband so movement of the tab is minimized. Fold headband to right side, wear and enjoy!
