AR-15 Immediate Action - S.P.O.R.T.S
The AR-15 requires a lot of good maintenance to keep it in the fight and even if you are religious about that maintenance, eventually it will fail to fire, mis-feed, or double feed when it does just remember S.P.O.R.T.S.
Slap It, Slap It Good
The first S in the acronym S.P.O.R.T.S is Slap, as in slap the magazine to make sure it is seated properly in the magazine well. If there is a misfire about 90% of the time a magazine that isn't or wasn't fully seated in the magazine well is the problem and slap to the bottom of the magazine will fix that. Don't be shy slapping the magazine, you aren't going to break it.
Pull That Charging Handle Until You Can't Pull It Any Farther!
The P in S.P.O.R.T.S is for Pull the charging handle. After you have slapped some sense into the magazine you are going to pull the charging handle all the way to the rear.
JAFO
The O in S.P.O.R.T.S is for Observe. You are going to physically look into the chamber of the weapon, you are looking to see if there is any obstruction to the chamber, is there a round in the magazine you just slapped, or any other visible reason the weapon didn't fire.
Just Let It Go
The R in S.P.O.R.T.S is for Release. As the title implies, once you have slapped the mag, pulled the charging handle, looked to see there is nothing blocking the chamber or any other visible reason the weapon shouldn't fire, release the charging handle, make sure not to ride it forward, just let it go!
Tapity, Tap Tap
The T in S.P.O.R.T.S is for Tap the Forward Assist. Ok, you've slapped the mag like your girlfriend slaps you, you've pulled the charging handle all the way back, you looked down inside the chamber, you've let the charging handle go and it went forward taking the bolt with it now you are going to Tap the forward assist a couple of times to make sure the bolt is all the way forward and locked.
Make It Go Bang!
The last S in S.P.O.R.T.S is for Squeeze the Trigger. You've slapped it, pulled it, looked at it, released it, tapped it, so now the only thing left is to make it go bang. After doing the S.P.O.R.T part of S.P.O.R.T.S get back on target and squeeze the trigger if everything went as planned your weapon just went bang. If It didn't go bang, try S.P.O.R.T.S again. If a couple of tries using S.P.O.R.T.S doesn't get your weapon to fire again it is time to start looking for other possible causes.
