Step 1: Cleaning and Labeling
Materials
rocks
permanent marker
disinfectant spray
dish soap
towel or paper towels
Instructions
Clean rocks thoroughly disinfect with disinfectant spray re wash with dish soap rinse leave to air dry on a towel or paper towel let completely dry
Once the rocks are completely dry,
Resemble rocks to look like a turtle.
Flip over the rocks and using the permanent marker label the legs (1,2,3,4). Label the head (H), and the body (B), draw arrows to wear the feet and head are position on the body.
Step 2: Filling In
Materials
rocks
Elmer's Glue
Instructions
Using newspaper to cover working space use Elmer's Glue fill in any holes or dents in the rocks
fill in the major holes or places in the rock don't cover every one just enough to give it the texture of the rock to make it easier to paint
Repeat this process several times until any holes or dents in the rocks are filled
let completely dry in between layers
Step 4: Base Coat
Materials
rocks
acrylic paint (I used apple barrel Country Gray and white)
paint brushes (2)
paint tray
water cup
Paper towels
Instructions
Once glue is completely dry
Use an acrylic paint that most closely matches the color of the rocks
Mix the paint color with black, brown, and/or white to get the closest shade
Mix with a little bit of water stir then add more water
Paint the rocks with water
Apply a small amount of paint and paint rock
if the paint is too thick of a layer re paint with a small amount of water to thin out
If the paint is too thin of a layer re paint with a small amount of paint to thicken
This process gives a more natural look
Step 5: Creating the 3d Look
Materials
rocks
Elmer's Glue
Elmer's Clear Glue
Dotting tools or the back of a paintbrush (I used nail art dotting tools)
Instructions
Once paint has completely dried
Turtle shell reference outline http://getdrawings.com/images/tortoise-shell-draw...
Turtle reference outline http://getdrawings.com/images/tortoise-shell-draw...
Outline the shell in regular Elmer's Glue to give the clear glue a guide to where to go and what ones you want to make “pop out”
This process takes several layers to achieve a 3d look and is best to work on one section of the turtle at a time
Each section of the turtle has a different process to be completed the videos are the instructions for this step are in videos in order to make it completely understandable.
The shell has an Elmer's Glue outline before filling in with clear glue to create an outline
The video order is body, head, legs Be creative!! Create your own unique turtle shell :)
Use as much layers of glue that give it a completely different look
For legs and head use the dotting tools or back of a paint brush or a tooth pick to make the smaller details
Look at reference images to get a good idea of what details need to be done ONCE THE SHELL, HEAD, AND LEGS ARE DONE MOVE TO STEP 6

Step 6: Re Apply Paint on Top of Rocks
Materials
rocks
acrylic paint (I used Apple Barrel Lime Tree, Country Gray, and white Delta Apple Green )
paint brushes (2)
paint tray
Water cup
Paper towels
newspaper
Instructions
Once the glue has completely dried on all of the rocks
Paint a thin layer over rock This is like step 4 However instead of matching the rocks color to paint we are matching shell, head and legs colors to what color rock you want
For the demo I'm doing greenish gray
NOTE this is an abstract turtle so colors do not matter unless you want to make an realistic abstract turtle
Use an acrylic paint that you want the turtle to be
Mix the paint or don't whatever you choose to do
Mix with a little bit of water
Apply a small amount of paint and paint rock
if the paint is too thick of a layer repaint with a small amount of water to thin out If the paint is too thin of a layer repaint with a small amount of paint to thicken
