Advent Infinity Scarf

leftoversadvent2.jpg

With December approaching and so much leftover sock yarn, I decided to make an advent calendar for my daughters. The first day of the calendar contains the main color of yarn. The second day contains the pattern and needles. Then the rest of the days each contain one small 25 yd ball of leftover sock yarn. The idea is to add a stripe to the scarf each day of December, and then finish the main big block of color at the end. What fun!

Finished Measurement: 54 inches long, 7.5 inches wide

Gauge:

6 sts per inch

Supplies

Yarn:

Fingering Weight

1 skein (~400 yds) Main Color (MC)

22 mini skeins (25 yds each) Various colors

Scrap yarn for provisional cast on

Needles:

Size 4, either 16 inch or 40 inch (for magic loop method)

Directions

Provisionally cast on 80 sts with scrap yarn. Join to knit in the round, being careful not to twist your stitches.

Knit 1 round with MC *Knit 12 rounds with one mini skein while carrying the MC up on the inside Knit 3 rounds with MC* Repeat * to * 21 more times.

Finishing:
Knit as much as you want of the main color to make it the length you want. I used up almost all of the main color to make it longer, but my daughter stopped at the end of the repeats to have a shorter scarf. Don’t bind off yet, but turn the cowl with the wrong side outwards and fasten all loose threads except the one knitted with the scrap yarn and the one on the last stripe. When all the loose threads are fastened, turn the cowl with the right side outwards. Pick up the 80 sts from the first row on another needle and remove the scrap yarn. The ends now needs to be grafted with the kitchener stitch. Make sure that you do not twist the cowl. When finished, fasten the last of the loose ends and block lightly.
