Advocacy: SODIS Method of Water Purification

sodismethode.jpg

Whether you are in the wilderness or just on a camping trip, it's always handy to know a little about water disinfection and purification. Here, you will learn just that, the way to purify water from many sources so that it is bacteria free and safe to drink. The SODIS method (the one shown here through 3 P's) is one of the most convenient and easy to learn methods of disinfection of water that can be used in almost any situation, unless, of course, youre locked in a place where there isn't any sunlight, or you're just a vampire or something similar...

Supplies

The stuff youll need is:

  1. Water (the stuff that you're going to be purifying)
  2. A clear plastic bottle
  3. Somewhere to place the bottle so that it is in direct sunlight.
  4. Sunlight (stating the obvious)

Preparing

First, you'll have to fill up the clear plastic bottles with the water that you mean to disinfect, this could just be water from wells or some other source that may not be fit for drinking. It's fine even if it's just that you're unsure about what to do to make sure that the water you drink won't make you sick.

Placing

After you fill up the plastic bottles and screw the lid on, you'll have to place them somewhere where there is direct sunlight and no shade. Make sure that the botlles are completely exposed to sunlight and no part of the bottle is covered, remove the labels of the bottles if they are opaque and do not let sunlight pass through.

Patience

The final step is the longest one, you'll have to wait for 6-8 hours so that the water is properly disinfected by the sunlight and is completely safe to drink. Once the hours are finished, you can be assured that the water is safe to drink.
