Affordable Housing 2022 - Guadalupe Vasquez
Hello and Welcome! My name is Guadalupe Vasquez and I am a senior from Ferris High School, Ferris, Texas. I found this project to be very fun and enjoyable.
I have always felt inspired to make the world a better place to live in. Therefore, this project was perfect! It let me express my ideas on how to reuse shipping containers to create new buildings.
Many ideas came to mind but building affordable housing was the one I continued with. My city/town is increasing in population and housing is more than ever needed. As we all know the prices and costs of basically everything is increasing due to inflation. This includes housing, therefore I would love to reuse these shipping containers as housing and making it affordable for many looking for housing in my city.
A little insight with were my design was going towards. I as well as many others love the look of a modern house. The idea of this house reflects this. With the colors, windows, stairs, or amenities I took inspiration from other modern houses.
There could be more to do with the place such as add a seating area outside, add vegetation outside and inside, add outer lighting and etc, but this is just the beginning for me.
A little side note this house is meant for a single person living by itself. If there would to be more people living here there would be certain changes.
Supplies
2 Shipping Containers
3 Glass Panel Doors 3' X 7' 1/8"
2 3.3' x 4.14' Windows
2 3' 1/2" x 4' 3/8" Windows
3 2' 3/8" x 3.2' Windows
1 4' x 5.7' Bed
1 4.2' x 1.5' x 6.7' Clothing Wardrobe
1 4' x 3' x 6'1/2" Shower
1 3.1' x 3' 3/4" x 10' Stairs
1 2.3' x 2.3' x 6.4' Refrigerator
1 1.85' x 3' x 3' Gas Range Stove
1 1.85' x 1.85' Sink
1 4.87' x 2' Sofa
I used Tinkercad as software.
Bottom Floor/Container
On the bottom container the first thing to do is add in the walls. Without the walls you would basically live in steel and that wouldn't be great for us.
Next goes in the plumbing, insulation, and electrical work. This will keep the house running with A/C, water, gas for the stove, and light.
Ok so now the stairs. I decided to put them in the back because in the middle of the bottom floor would take up space we could use for storage. I love the look of a spiral staircase; it's different than other staircases.
There is a television for entertainment. Under it we could add compact storage for anything. Directly on the other side there is a sofa to sit and watch a movie or TV show(s). I had the idea of a big living space just incase we have visitors.
This is basically it for the bottom floor, now let's go up!
Top Floor/Container
On the second floor, we have the bedroom and restroom. When you come up the stairs from below there is I guess you could call it a balcony. From this balcony there are two glass panel doors to the bedroom. Once you enter the room there is a wardrobe for clothes and the bed. Along side there is a pretty big glass panel in front of the mid-sized bed.
I personally love looking out into the night and seeing the stars. But of course for the person living here, if they don't want this another option is for a projector to watch movies or shows. Or also add in a desk to be able to work from home.
Then as you keep walking in there is a door that leads to the restroom. In here there is a lavatory sink; also under the sink there is storage were you could put extra toilet paper, soap, towels and etc. The toilet is a normal modern toilet; there's nothing much to say about it. Moving on to the shower. i love glass showers, therefore I chose it as apart of the house. Pretty spacious!
Also on the roof there are solar panels which is pretty good for the environment.
Summary
This affordable home reuses many items such as:
- shipping containers
- the doors
- the wood for the stairs
- the column for the stairs
- some of the windows
This would become very useful in my community especially at this moment. The population here is increasing and with this affordable house getting a house could be easier for many people incoming.
This is a two story shipping container house. It contains most of the amenities needed. There is a sofa, tv, bed, wardrobe, bathroom, shower, refrigerator, stove, sink. Many windows as well because who doesn't love natural lighting coming through.
But this is about it. Pretty easy and can be adapted to certain people!
