Alice Madness Returns Cosplay Tutorial

Hey, it's Koumori, and today we're going to be making Alice Liddell's default blue outfit from American McGee's Alice Madness Returns! Each "step" will cover a different part of Alice's outfit: necklace, petticoat, dress, apron, and bow. This tutorial assumes that the reader has a basic knowledge of sewing, so I would mark it as a moderate difficulty, though it could be followed by a determined beginner.

MATERIALS:

-silver colored polymer clay

- one (1) eye pin

- two (2) jump rings

- one (1) lobster clasp

-black ribbon

-glue

-aluminum foil

-baking sheet

-oven

-jewelry pliers

TUTORIAL:

1. Start by preparing your surface by covering a baking sheet with a piece of aluminum foil. Pull off a piece of polymer clay. Roll it in-between your hands to soften it, then roll it into a coil. Bend and sculpt the coil until you are satisfied with the omega shape.

2. Insert the eye pin into the top of the clay (if necessary, carefully trim off any excess wire that may poke through the opposite side of the clay).

3. Bake the clay according to the directions on the packaging.

4. After the clay had cooled, I noticed that my eye pin was loose, so I secured it with a bit of glue.

5. Once the glue has dried, it is time to make the rest of the necklace. Cut a piece of black ribbon the length you want your necklace to be.

6. Use the jewelry pliers to attach the lobster clasp onto one of the jump rings.

7. Tie one end of the ribbon onto the jump ring.

8. Slide the omega charm onto the ribbon, then tie the other end of the ribbon onto the remaining jump ring.

9. If necessary, seal the ribbon knots with a bit of glue.

10. And with that, Alice's necklace is done!

MATERIALS:

- Simplicity 1807 pattern (view A)

-white fabric (I used white Kona cotton)

-elastic

-white thread

-white lace trim

- basic sewing supplies (scissors, pins, sewing machine, etc.)

TUTORIAL:

1. Start by cutting out the front and back pieces of the skirt. (I then zig-zagged around the edges to keep them from fraying, but you can use whatever finishing technique you prefer).

2. Pin the sides of the skirt together and sew.

3. Press seams open.

4. Putting right sides together, pin the lace trim along the bottom of the petticoat.

5. Sew trim into place.

6. Turn the lace under and top-stitch into place.

7. Hand-sew the gap between the two ends of the lace closed.

8. Cut the front and back pieces of the waistband out of the white fabric and zig-zag around the edges.

9. Pin and sew the waistband pieces together at the sides, leave a gap in the center of one seam to thread the elastic through later.

10. Press seams open.

11. Putting wrong sides together, pin and sew the edges of the waistband together.

12. Putting right sides together, pin and sew the waistband onto the rest of the skirt.

13. Cut a piece of elastic the length you need.

14. Thread the elastic through the hole in the waistband.

15. Once the elastic has completely encircled the waistband, pull both ends out through the hole in the waistband.

16. Sew the two ends of the elastic together.

17. Tug on the waistband. The elastic will be pulled back into the fabric and will no longer be visible.

18. And with that, Alice's petticoat is done!

MATERIALS:

- New Look 6299 pattern (view A)

- Simplicity 1807 pattern (view A)

- blue fabric (I used Casa satin from Joann's)

- blue thread

- one (1) zipper

- interfacing

- basic sewing supplies (scissors, pins, etc.)

TUTORIAL:

1. This tutorial will require a lot of pattern-mashing to create the desired silhouette of Alice's dress. It seems intimidating at first, but take it one step at a time and everything will fall into place. I started by using the New Look 6299 pattern and shortened it at the waistline to turn it into a bodice-only pattern.

2. Cut out the side and center front bodice pieces and zig-zag around the edges (or use whatever finishing method you prefer).

3. Pin and sew the front bodice pieces together along the connecting seams.

4. Repeat this process for the back of the bodice, leaving the center back seam open.

5. Putting right sides together, pin and sew the front and back bodice pieces together along the sides and across the shoulders.

6. Now we are going to move on to the skirt portion of Alice's dress. I'm using Simplicity 1807 view A (the same pattern we used to make Alice's petticoat). This pattern is made to have two side seams and just pull over the head when worn. This style won't work with the bodice, so we will have to tweak it a bit.

7. Cut one skirt piece without altering the pattern, this will be the front of the skirt.

8. The back of the skirt will need an additional seam for the zipper, so instead of cutting the piece on the fold, use the pattern to cut two pieces with a little extra material added at the center back for seam allowance.

9. Zig-zag along the edges of the skirt pieces to keep them from fraying.

10. Putting right sides together, pin and sew the skirt pieces together along the side seams.

11. Sew the skirt to the bodice along the waistband. Depending on the size pattern you use, you may have to gather the skirt slightly to fit the bottom of the bodice.

12. For Alice's sleeves, you will need a puffed sleeve pattern. I used Simplicity 1093.

13. Cut out the base sleeve puffs out of the blue fabric and zig-zag around the edges.

14. Fold each sleeve puff so that the right sides are together. Pin and sew them along the sides to make a modified tube.

15. For the cuffs of the sleeves, cut two rectangles out of the fabric to whatever dimensions you like and zig-zag the edges.

16. Fold each cuff piece so that the right sides are together. Pin and sew them along the short edge.

17. Fold each cuff piece so that the wrong sides are together. Pin and sew the raw edges together along the tops of the cuff pieces.

18. Putting right sides together, gather the bottom of the puffed sleeve onto the top of the cuff.

19. Pin and sew them together, repeat for the second sleeve.

20. Putting right sides together, pin and sew the sleeves to the bodice.

21. Cut out the facing pieces out of both the blue fabric and some interfacing.

22. Iron the interfacing to the wrong side of the blue fabric. You can also zig-zag the edges if you desire.

23. Putting right sides together, pin and sew the facing pieces together at the side seams.

24. Putting right sides together, pin and sew the facing to the neckline of the bodice.

25. Use an iron to press the bodice along the neckline for a smoother, more polished look.

26. Putting right sides together, pin and sew the dress together along the center back seam.

27. Insert a zipper into the center back seam using your preferred method.

28. Pin and sew a rolled hem along the bottom of the skirt.

29. And with that, Alice's dress is done! It was a long project but the biggest part of the costume is done, now onto the apron!

-white fabric (I used white cotton sateen)

-interfacing

-white thread

- one (1) separating zipper

-fabric paint (or acrylic paint mixed with textile medium)

-paint brushes

-disappearing ink pen (or writing instrument of your choice)

-basic sewing supplies (scissors, pins, etc.)

TUTORIAL:

1. Alice's apron is very fitted, so for the top of the apron I used the same pattern that I used for the dress.

2. Shorten the dress pattern at the waist and use the bodice center front and center back pattern to cut the pieces out of white fabric.

3. Zig-zag the edges to keep them from fraying or use whatever method of finishing you prefer.

4. Pin and sew the back pieces to the front along the shoulders.

5. Hem the sides of the apron bodice using a rolled hem.

6. For the skirt portion of the apron, I used the same pattern that I used for the dress, I just did not cut it on the fold and shortened it along the bottom hem.

7. Zig-zag around the edges to keep them from fraying.

8. Hem the edges of the apron using a rolled hem.

9. For the pockets on Alice's apron, make a pattern the size you would like with the ends tapering inward slightly at the top.

10. Cut four picket pieces out of the white fabric and zig-zag around the edges.

11. Pin two of the pocket pieces together and sew around the edges, keeping the top open.

12. Turn the pocket piece right side out.

13. Fold the top of the pocket down and stitch into place.

14. Repeat for the second pocket.

15. Pin the pockets onto the apron and sew them on, leaving the tops of the pockets open.

16. Cut out two rectangles to be the waistband and zig-zag around the edges.

17. Pin and sew one of the rectangles to the bottoms pf the apron bodice pieces.

18. Gather the top of the apron skirt to the width of the apron bodice and sew it to the other side of the waistband rectangle.

19. Press inward the top and bottom of the second rectangle.

20. Putting wring sides together, pin the second rectangle to the first with the raw edges folded inward and sew in place.

21. Use a disappearing ink pen (or other writing utensil) to draw the alchemy designs onto the apron pockets.

22. Fill in the outlines with black paint.

23. To add a little bit more of the grime on Alice's skirt, mix some black paint with water and blot it onto areas that would gather dirt, such as the apron hem.

24. For the blood stains, splatter red paint strategically along the apron skirt. Vary the shades or red for a more realistic look.

25. Cut the facing pieces out of the white fabric and interfacing.

26. Iron the interfacing on the fabric facing pieces. Zig-zag the edges if desired.

27. Pin and sew the facing pieces together at the side seams.

28. Putting right sides together, pin and sew the facing onto the neckline of the apron.

29. Insert a separating zipper into the back of Alice's apron using your preferred method.

30. And with that Alice's apron is done! All that is left is the bow!

MATERIALS:

-white fabric (I used cotton sateen)

-white thread

-snaps

-basic sewing supplies (scissors, pins, etc.)

-model magic

-mod podge

-paint

-paint brushes

-hot glue gun

TUTORIAL:

1. Start by cutting two rectangles out of the white fabric. These are going to be for the "ties" of the bow.

2. Zig-zag around the edges, or use whatever finishing method you prefer.

3. Fold the rectangles in half lengthwise.

4. Pin and sew them together along the sides, leaving the top open.

5. Turn the ties right side out and topstitch.

6. Gather the raw edges of the ties and sew them to the back of the apron.

7. Make a pattern for the base of the bow. The shape is like a rectangle with an enlarged center.

8. Use the bow pattern to cut four pieces out of the white fabric and two of the interfacing.

9. Iron the interfacing onto two of the fabric pieces.

10. Zig-zag around all of the edges.

11. Putting right sides together, pin and sew the interfaced bow pieces to the non-interfaced pieces, leaving the ends open.

12. Turn the bow pieces right side out and press them flat.

13. Place the bow pieces on top of each other and sew them together at the sides.

14. Turn the bow piece right side out to create the base bow.

15. To create the "tie", cut a rectangle out of the white fabric and zig-zag the edges.

16. Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise and sew along the side, leaving the ends open.

17. Turn the knot piece right side out.

18. Turn the edges inward and sew them into place.

19. Wrap the knot around the center of the base bow and hand-sew into place.

20. To make the skull, begin by sculpting the base skull shape out of model magic.

21. Allow the clay to dry and harden.

22. Use some paint to add a bit more dimension to the skull.

23. After the paint has dried, coat the skull in a layer of mod podge and let dry.

24. Use a glue gun to attach the skull to the bow.

25. Hand-sew snaps onto the bow and apron to attach it to the back of the apron.

26. And with that Alice's bow is done! You now have your very own Alice Cosplay
