Amigurumi Monkey

I wrote this pattern up when I first started crocheting amigurumi 13 years ago. I'm revisiting it and remaking it to share with you!

Supplies

- Worsted weight yarn. Any color you like. I'm using a dark brown.

- A hook. I used E hook or 3.5mm to make a 4 in or 10cm sitting doll.

- Felt. Any color.

- Embroidery floss. Any color you like to sew the felt to the head or Fabric glue.

- 10 mm Safety eyes. I'm using clear so I can paint them any color I want. Alternatively you can use felt or embroidery for eyes.

- Stitch marker or something to mark the beginning of your round.

- Large eyed needle with sharp tip and/or curved upholstery needle for easier weaving of ends and sewing felt to face.

- Scissors or snips

- Long quilting pins for pre-placing parts

- Stuffing. Enough to fill all parts firmly.

Familirarize Yourself With Stitches Used.

This tutorial is meant to be used by someone with beginner knowledge of crochet and Amigurumi. If you can make a sphere you can make this.

Stitches/ Abbreviations used:

Magic Ring.

Rnd = Round

Inc = increase

Sc = single crochet

Dec = Decrease (I like to use the invisible decrease method. If you are not familiar there are many tutorials on YouTube that can guide you.)

* = Repeat till end of round.

This item is worked in a continuous spiral. Use a stitch marker to keep your place.

Number in parentheses is the stitch count at the end of each round. Keep this in mind because you can count the stitches at the end of each round to see if you kept your place.

Head

Head

Rnd 1 - Magic Ring (6).

I like using magic ring because it makes a tighter ring. No hole on the top for stuffing to show. If you prefer using the chain method, just make sure you have 6 working stitches at the end.

Rnd 2 - Inc all (12)

Rnd 3 - Inc 1, sc 1 * (18)

Rnd 4 - Inc 1, sc 2 * (24)

Rnd 5 - Inc 1, sc 3 * (30)

This is where you will start to get some height to the head

Rnd 6-9 - Sc all (30)

The next 3 rounds bring the stitches in to give it is spherical shape. I like to use the invisible decrease method.

Rnd 10 - Dec 1 sc 3 * (24)

Rnd 11 - Dec 1, sc 2 * (18)

Rnd 12 - Dec 1, sc 1 * (12)

Adding Felt to Head

This is where you would want to put in any eyes and the face because after this the body will begin and it will be closed up.

Add stuffing before sewing face to stretch out the head. Stuff it firmly.

I cut a heart that measured a bit under 2 in (5cm) across and rounded out the bottom. Feel free to place the felt piece and cut accordingly to fit the head. I like to make the back of the head where the stitch marker is.

Split your embroidery floss in half. I used 3 strands of the 6. Save the other half for later for the nose.

Sew down or glue the felt face and take the stuffing out.

Measure where your eyes are going to go and as best as you can from the inside, line it up with the felt and make a small cut through the felt only (Do not cut through crochet stitches) so the eyes can go through the felt and the stitches. Secure your eyes with the safety eye brackets.

Stuff your head again before proceeding.

Body

IMG_6536 (2).JPG

This will continue from the head to make the rest of the body in one piece.

Rnd 13 - Sc all (12)

Rnd 14 - Inc 1, sc 1 * (18)

Rnd 15 - Inc 1, sc 2 * (24)

Rnd 16 - Inc 1, sc 3 * (30)

Rnd 17-21 - Sc all (30)

Rnd 22 - Dec 1 sc 3 * (24)

Rnd 23 - Dec 1, sc 2 * (18)

Rnd 24 - Dec 1, sc 1 * (12)

Rnd 25 - Dec all (6)

Stuff the body firmly as you did the head.

Sew up hole through front of each stitch and pull to close hole and weave in all ends.

Arms

IMG_6569.JPG

Make 2 arms.

Rnd 1 - Magic ring 4

Rnd 2 - Inc all (8)

Rnds 3-5 - Sc all (8)

Rnd 6 - Dec, sc 4, dec (6)

Rnds 7-12 - Sc all, finish off

Leave long enough yarn to sew the arms to the body. No stuffing is needed. Just tuck the loose yarn from the beginning of the rounds down in to the hands before round 7.

Legs

IMG_6663 (2).JPG
IMG_6765 (2).JPG

Make 2.

Rnd 1 - Magic ring (6)

Rnd 2 - Inc all (12)

Rnds 3 - 4 - Sc all (12)

Rnd 5 - Dec 3, sc till end of round (9)

Rnds 6 -12 - Sc all (9)

Stuff firmly about half way. Pinch closed and sew. Make sure your seam is parallel to the foot or "toes"

Tail

IMG_6684 (2).JPG

The tail is worked on a foundation row and
turned.

Row 1 - Chain 25, turn.

Row 2 - Skip first stitch. Sc till end it will coil up on its self. (24)

Ears

IMG_6679 (3).JPG

Rnd 1 - Magic ring (6)

Rnd 2 - Inc all (12)

Rnd 3 - Inc 1, sc 1 * (18)

Finish off. Weave excess yarn behind ear. Leave tail to sew to head.

Cut felt about .75in or 2cm

Sew to ears.

Assembly

Use your pins to plan where you will be sewing your parts before you commit to sewing. It's much easier to correct placement now than after sewing.

Do it in pairs. Line them up with each other. Move it around till the placement looks right. I like to start with Arms first. Then legs then ears and finally tail.

I like to use a U shaped upholstery needle. It really helps to get in to the tough areas like the arms and legs. It is not necessary but really helpful.

Embroider the Mouth and Nose

IMG_6809 (2).JPG

To embroider the nose you can use any style you'd like. I chose to do it this way because it made sense to me.

I start by inserting the needle at the bottom to where I want the middle of the "Y" to be. Making sure to leave a bit of a tail that I can pull through the body later to hide the end. I do this about 2 times.

Next I go from the bottom and make sure the needle comes out where I want the Top of the "Y" to be. Then I repeat from the middle of the "Y" twice.

Same process for the right side of the "Y"

To hide my ends I just insert needle in to the middle of the Y and pull through the back of the head. I cut close to the stitches and massage the head until the floss hides itself. Repeat for the log piece that was left at the beginning.

Your Monkey is now ready to be given a name!
