Angry Bird on Slingshot

My sons really like Angry Birds....I should say CRAZY for Angry Birds, especially my youngest one. He could play (or demand us to play while he watches and giggles) the game on Roku, although his aim isn't perfect yet. I think he finds the ones on his tablet to be much easier (with fingers), but he loves the Roku version much better (again, since most of the time we are the one who have to play while he just watches lol).

We decided to make an Angry Bird cake for his birthday and he thought it was one of his Angry Birds toys so he was super excited trying to touch it and even cried when we told him no. Needless to say he was looking so confused when we sliced the cake. I am sure he thought 'savages' lol He cried non-stop.

So after only 2 slices, we handed the cake to him and he run around the house holding it....almost rolling it even. Which he does quite often with his stuffies and toys.

Structure

The structure as shown is welded, this is to ensure if your cake is the heavy kind, structure won't collapse especially if you aren't making the cake for yourself but to be transported elsewhere. Even the slightest bump would jeopardize your cake if the structure isn't strong, thus my husband welded the structure with the help of his bro and colleague.

On the structure if you enlarge the picture, they drilled holes on the slingshot. These holes are to screw the bottom part of the cake which is made of styrofoam.

You can get round styrofoam from Dollarstore, Walmart, Michael's etc.

Slice styrofoam into half round. Do regard the "use this" writing on the picture (it was for another project).

Cut cake board as big as the styrofoam for your base.

Cake

You can definitely use any type of cakes you prefer. This time I made cranberry white cake.

1 2/3 cups flour

1 cup sugar

a pinch of salt

1 tsp baking soda

1 cup water

1 tsp vinegar

1 tsp vanilla or almond flavoring

6 T oil

1/2 cup yogurt or sour cream or buttermilk

a generous handful dried sweet and tart cranberries, chopped

Mix dry ingredients and make a well in the center

Mix wet ingredients and pour into center

Combine mixture and stir in dried cranberries

Pour mixture on half sphere pan (half round ball pan, such as Wilton)

Bake on preheated 350 F for half hour or until knife inserted in center comes out clean

Flip pan and cool cake on rack completely

White Chocolate Ganache

While cake is cooling, prepare your ganache. You can double the recipe for bigger shape of Angry Bird (there are 2 sizes of styrofoam at Walmart, medium and large, I used the medium to make this cake and the ganache below is enough to fill and cover. If you use the large size styrofoam, do double ganache recipe to be on the safe side)

100 ml 35% heavy cream

210 g white chocolate (chocolate chips is fine)

Heat heavy cream in microwave and stir in chopped chocolate/chocolate chips until melted

Cool to room temperature, stirring occasionally, until desired thickness/spreadable

Slingshot

While cooling cake and waiting ganache to reach desired consistency, cover the slingshot structure with brown/black fondant. I prefer covering it with white fondant and then mix a couple of food coloring such as yellow, brown, black, red, to achieve wood color, which then I paint it on the white fondant.

This can be done a day in advance or a couple of hours in advance.

Making Angry Bird on Slingshot

Cover your cake board with aluminum foil

Spread some ganache on the bottom part of the cake board, then attach it to the flat side of the styrofoam

To make it easier for you to work on the cake, place the styrofoam on a bowl or a cup

Slice cake in center, fill with ganache and stack cake slices back

Spread some ganache on cake board and place cake on it. At this point you will have your full ball shaped cake

Coat cake with ganache and cover with fondant (either homemade or store bought)

Color and decorate cake as Angry Bird (we chose the red one for this time. You can obv. cover the cake with red fondant instead white as I did on this instructable).

Now using electric drill, attach cake to the slingshot using a couple of screws, ON the styrofoam part

Voila :)
