Apologetical Pen
Turning a pen on wood lathe.
Supplies
Pen Blanks.
Pen Kits.
Wood Lathe
Prepare Wood Blanks
Cut blanks in half. Drill a 7mm hole in the center using drill press. Possible with a regular drill but more accurate with drill press. Use the blank holder for easy use.
Prepare Supplies on Wood Lathe
Take the prepared blanks and put them on pen turning mandrel. Attach the Maddrel to lathe.
Turn Pen and Finish
Start turning pen using two main tools Roughing Gouge and Carbide Tool. First use Carbide Tool, with black handle, to turn square prisms into cylinders. Then use Roughing Gouge with brown handle, to shape your pen. After you reach desired shape sand the pen using sandpaper in the following order: 120, 150/180, 220, 320, 400, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 6000, 7000. After turning pen press it together using Pen Press.
Skills Learned and Reflection
New skills learned in the project were pen turning on lathe and different levels of sanding finishes.
The case for pen was not part of the project but making the case enhanced the look of the finished project.
Funding for this project was provided by the Invention Studio at Georgia Tech student organization and the project was built in the Flowers Invention Studio space.
