The goal of this game is to raise public awareness on co-creation of knowledge on micro plastic pollution in the Arctic involving local communities knowledge. This game took inspiration from research papers on Arctic pollution by

(micro) plastics. In this game you will go on a science campaign to collect samples in the

Arctic to gain knowledge on plastic distribution in the Arctic flore and fauna. You manage a crew of researchers, a captain and technical staff to collect samples and bring them to your research vessel and land laboratories.

Strategically upgrading your workers and collaborating with arctics communities will be key

to win this game!

Supplies

Machines:

  • any laser that can cut through 3mm plywood (mine is a 40W)

Materials:

  • 3mm plywood
  • paints and brush

Context

During a 10 days residency in the Joint Research Center of European Union in Ispra I designed and made this board game prototype.

Please note it is still a prototype, the first version of the game, it will need several iteration before becoming a finished board game.

I used Inkscape to design the components of the board game.

Laser Cutting

Laser_Cutting_the_research_vessels.jpg
laser_cutting_the_animal_token_and_animal_samples.jpg

I laser cut most of the components of the boards game:

  • the main boars,
  • the players boards: the research vessel
  • the animal tokens and the meeples.

The wood cubes come from Amazon.

I used acrylic paints to paint the components of the game:

  • the main board,
  • the player personal boards and tokens,
  • the animal tokens,
  • the meeples.

Rules Version 1

arctic_plastic_rule_book_v1.png

Please note that this is a prototype and the first iteration of the board game.

It will need several play test reviews and improvements before reaching it final form.

The rules needs synthesis, but if you are curious of how the game plays on this stage have a look in the pdf!

You can use components of this game in your own diy board game as long as you cite this instructables and do not use the game for a commercial use.

Happy board game making!
