DIY headphones
Gather All Materials
- Plastic cup/ Styrofoam cup
- 2 neodymium Magnets
- Electrical tape
- Aux Plug
- Copper wire (20 gauge)
- Glue stick
- Sand paper
- Scissors
- Alligator clips (optional)
Wrapping the Coil
Wrap the coil around a glue stick 30 times and leave at least an inch if wire in both ends. For the headphones make two coils, each coil wrapped around a glue stick 30 times
Sand Down the Coil
Sand both inches of wire on the sides until there is only copper showing. Sand the ends of the two other coils for the headphones
Setting It Up
Place wrapped coil in the inside or outside of the cup of your choice. In our final headphone design we placed it in the middle and inside of a styrofoam cup.
Placing the Magnet
Place one neodymium magnet in the inside of the cup and the other on the outside. Place the magnets on the inside of the coils and tape it together with electrical tape and make sure to leave the sanded sides of the wire sticking out. For the final headphones place one magnet inside one cup and the other magnet in a different cup. (styrofoam cups for us)
Connecting It to the Aux Plug
If you need help grab alligator clips and clip in one sanded side of the coil to one terminal of the aux plug and do the same with a new alligator clip. Plug in Aux to a source of sound or music. For the headphones grab 3, 12 inch strings of wire and sand all 6 ends. Next, grab one string of wire and twist one side of the coil together with the other coil. Then grab the other string and twist the other side of the coil to one side of the terminal in the aux plug and do the same with the other string of wire.
Troubleshooting
Make sure the coil has a good connection to the alligator clips and to the terminals. Also make sure you connected a sanded part of the wire to a different sanded part of a wire It will not work if you twist them together and they arnt sanded properly.
