Become a Better Rock Climber
Want to compete as a rock climber or enjoy climbing leisurely? Climbing is a great way to stay fit and enjoy the outdoors with friends. The climbing community is full of people who also cross train and are involved with other sports. Climbing is the true mind and body connection that serves a purpose more than a physical workout. Allowing ourselves to reach new heights (literally) is a way to test ourselves and enjoy the progress when we achieve new goals in climbing!
Supplies
You will need a positive attitude, chalk, a comfortable harness and tight shoes!
Cross Training
Cross training is a sure way to prepare yourself for the new terrains you will face climbing. The climbing gym will simply not cut it! You need to get outdoors and onto different types of rocks. Careful! Granite is sharp and will cut your hands compared to softer rocks. Sandstone breaks easily, so hand and feet placement is critical. Climbing outdoors with friends is fun, and competitions outdoors are all day events sure to wear you out come sunset!
Aside from you normal equipment, you will need a crash pad outside climbing higher than four feet or more! Sunscreen is recommended even on cloudy days.
Remember That Climbing Is a Mindset, Too!
Climbing is more than just a hobby. Climbing is a way of life. Many climbers would categorize themselves as outgoing and curious people. This means that we want to see more of wherever we are. That tree outside with low branches? We'll climb it. That building with bricks having 1/4" ledges? We'll climb it. Climbing is about being curious and wanting more from.... everything!
Training Includes Self Care and Rest Days
Being a better climber is not about the hand machine workouts and strict macro meals. Taking time for yourself at home early in the mornings and late in the evenings is equally important. One thing that all climbers can agree on that makes them better climbers is flexibility and stretching. Taking 10 or 15 minutes a day to get it your splits will make a big difference over time and you will notice different ranges of motion in your climbing. Soon you will be able to stretch and pull yourself in directions you would never think possible!
Friends Who Climb Together, Stay Together!
Like I mentioned earlier, the climbing community is where like-minded people come together to enjoy one of the most natural and primitive sports we have! The community in climbing is one where people can be totally themselves and free spirited. Of course there is competition, but climbing is an individual sport first and your progress is for you to notice only. Climbing with friends is a way to keep yourself accountable for yourself as well as encouraging others! The motivation is there when you climb with others and reminds you why climbing is more than just a past time- it is a way of life!
