This instructable shows "How to design a Holder for carrying a water bottle on your bike using PVC pipes". This is a lightweight and trendy bike bottle cage.

A bottle cage is a device used to affix a water bottle to a bicycle. Composed of plastic, aluminum, stainless steel, titanium or carbon fiber, it is attached to the main frame of a bicycle. Most modern bicycles have threaded holes in the frame to hold the bottle cage. even though they may be welded, glued, riveted, or moulded into the frame material.

The vast majority of bottle cages consist of a single hoop of metal tubing or rod bent to hold the bottle snugly and engage the neck, or an indentation in the case of larger bottles, to prevent it from bouncing out.

Mounting

The standard bottle cage has two mounting holes, two and a half inches (64 mm) apart, to match the threaded holes in the frame, and through which small bolts pass. Some have a strap, adjustable for non standard bottles. The holes are usually sized and threaded to accept an M5 x 0.8 bolt, which means 5 mm in diameter and thread pitch of 0.8 mm.

Bottle

The standard size of bottle cage holds a bottle 2-7/8 inches (2.875") or 73 mm in diameter and five inches (5") or 127 mm tall, or with an indentation that far from the bottom for the tab on the cage to engage.

So, these are few guidelines if anyone wants to follow or buy any manufactured part. Let's build one now.

Tools & Materials

The main material that we will use is PVC pipe, as it is cheap, durable, lightweight and easy to cut and shape. So, below are few Tools & Materials that will be needed for making this Bottle cage.

TOOLS

  • Mini Hacksaw
  • File Set (mostly flat and half round)
  • Scissor
  • Cutter
  • Marker Pen or Sketch pens (for the markup)
  • Drill Machine (for making holes)
  • Heat Gun (or a Lighter)

MATERIALS

  • PVC Pipe (2inch - 2.5inch)
  • Sandpaper
  • Super Glue
  • Glue stick
  • Bolts (M5 x 0.8)

Make a Design Markup

First of all I have made a design markup of my choice for the bottle cage in a piece of paper, so that it becomes easy to give marking on the PVC pipe and also to markup evenly on both sides.

Then I cut out the design on the paper with the help of a scissor.

Transfer the Design to PVC Pipe

Next, I attached the paper piece to the PVC pipe with some Glue stick. You can attach with some tape also. Hence, I transferred the design to the PVC pipe using a Marker Pen by drawing the same lines throughout.

Then, peel out the paper after marking up.

Cutting the PVC Pipe

Now, roughly cut the PVC pipe with a mini Hacksaw according to the markup by any way you find suitable. Also for the inner sections, make a Hole and insert the saw blade only and then cut.

Sanding & Smoothing

Next, I used File sets to sand to the actual linings, here I mostly used Flat and Half Round Files. Then I used some Sandpaper to finally smooth out the edges.

Making the Bottle Rest

Now, we need to close the opening in the bottom of our Cage. Here, I used a small piece of PVC pipe to make the Bottle Rest mechanism that will be fitted to the bottom-most part of our holder, so that a bottle remains stuck in the cage.

The, I used a Heat gun (or a Lighter) to preheat and bend the piece, so that it can be easily fitted to our bottle holder.

Make Gap for the Bottle Rest

Here, I made a opening for my bottle Rest piece to sit on that we have made previously.

Make Bolt Holes

Next, I marked two points according to my bike position (generally 64mm apart) and Drilled two identical holes in the middle for inserting the threaded Bolts.

Fix the Bottle Rest

Here, I fixed the Bottle Rest piece using some Superglue to stay at position. So that later on it can be tightened with bolts.

Making a Upriser

To balance the height in the back of our cage, I made another piece with PVC and fixed to the back of the upper hole. Now, our bottle Holder will be in same level.

Finished Product

Thus, our product is finished now and ready to be mounted to the Bike. However, if you want to give a color to the cage you can, but I would like to leave it as it is.

Mount on Your Bike

Now, using the M5 x 0.8 threaded bolts, screw and mount the Bottle cage to the Bike and put your water Bottle.

So, this is a very simple and easy instructable that I bring today.

Hope you've liked it and learnt something as well.
