Bicycle Handlebar Grip Change-out

Living in the city I ride my bike often and want to have more stable grips while navigating the traffic. I used this procedure on an old bike and thought I would share my tips.

Supplies

1. Allen wrench
2. Canned Air
3. New Grips
4. Hairspray

Getting Ready to Remove Old Grips.

Loosen shifter/brake levers and more out of the way, allowing access to the inner ends of the grips.

Remove the Old Grips

Slip the nozzle of the air canister under the grip. It can be a little tricky if the grips are tight to the handlebars. If you pinch the edge you can create a gap large enough to slip the nozzle in. While spraying air under the grips rotate and pull on the grips off the end of the handle bars. The air will create a small cushion of air separating the handlebars and the grip.

Installing the New Grips.

Using a strong super ultra mega hold hairspray(I used an "8" on the Suave scale), spray the handlebar and inside the grip. Slide the grips on until the outer end of the grips are even with the outer end of the handlebars. The hairspray will act first as a lubricant, then as glue when it dries.

Finishing Up.

Add end caps to the handle bars, reposition the shift/brake lever, and let sit to dry. Then enjoy a safer ride!!
