Bird House Designed Like a CCTV

This is a Bird House designed like a CCTV. It is inspired from vintage outdoor surveillance systems. This is made of 6mm Plywood and 2mm PVC sheet.

There are many natural bird houses that are mesmerizing when we see and thus the bird too. So, I decided to make a homemade bird house for the birds to come and make nest in my garden.

However, in most cases, you will need to build a specific type of bird house. For example, some birds nest in colonies and some on platforms without roofs. Most bird houses are square or rectangular and feature an entrance hole. Also, remember the size of the box and the size of the entrance hole attracts different species of birds.

After building your bird house, try not to disturb it. Moving it will cause losing the birds, as some species of birds are will not abandon the nest if you touch it, but if they see you getting too close, they may abandon eggs that aren’t hatched. So, do not disturb the birds, after they have made nest in the birdhouse.

As I already mentioned I used 6mm plywood for building the main box and 2mm PVC sheet for making the top cover to save from rain. And the tools I used are listed below.

TOOLS

• Jigsaw
• Hacksaw
• File set
• Drill machine & bits
• Circle cutting drill bits
• Hot air gun
• Sand parers
• Screw driver
• Ruler
• Clamps (C-clamp & G-clamp)

MATERIALS

• Plywood (6mm, 2mm)
• Wood piece (1/2 inch thick)
• PVC sheet (2mm)
• Wood glue (fevicol sr)
• Super glue
• Double sided tape
• Foam tape (2mm)
• Wood primer (white)
• Spray paint (silver)

OTHER COMPONENTS

• Piece of wire or cable (6mm)
• Screws (M4x25)
• Bamboo sticks (6mm)
• Metal rod or Nail (2mm)

First of all I took a 6mm plywood sheet and marked linings of the box that needs to be cut.

Then using my Jigsaw I cut the pieces and sand the edges.

Next, I cut a entrance hole in the front part and another small hole to insert a piece of stick to have the bird rest.

Here, I used hole saw cutting drill bits of two different sizes that can cut a ring formation.

This way I cut several pieces and glued them together to have the final entrance piece. Also to give a look of camera lens, like a CCTV.

Then, I simply glued the entrance piece to the entrance hole in our front panel piece of the main box.

Next, I used a thin bamboo stick (6mm) for making the bird rest. Then I tightly inserted the piece through the hole and glued it nicely.

Now, we will build our main box. I made the chamber of size around 9inch x 3.5inch, that should look ok.

Next, I glued all the sides together and clamped overnight for drying.

Next, after drying I again glued the front and back panels to the box and used some rubber bands to hold them tightly.

And you can see the final box after dried.

Next, the CCTV needs a stand to sit on. Here I used a thick wood piece (of around 1/2 inch) to hold the screws and 6mm ply to both the sides and some 2mm ply to top and front sides (so that no rain water can enter in between the joints).

Here, I fixed a piece of thin bamboo stick to the stand in order to place the main box straight above it. Also I used a small nail (or maybe a metal rod) inside the bamboo stick to get hooked to the bottom the the chamber.

Next, the stand needs a back panel to get screwed to the tree. So, here I cut a rectangular piece and drilled four holes to each corner and two holes in the middle to support the stand.

Then I applied some wood glue and fixed the stand to the back panel permanently.

Now, we need some gap in between the stand and the box, basically to raise the box a bit.

Here I used the leftover circle pieces from the entrance hole that we cut earlier. I glued all the pieces together and a little bigger circle at the top to look nicer and real.

Next, I simply glued the raiser piece to the bottom of our main box and clamped to dry. And finally it looks like in picture.

Now, our main chamber and stands are ready, all we need is the top cover plate as it has in a real CCTV, to protect it from rain water.

Here, I used a PVC pipe (pvc sheet), as it is already waterproof and cut to the needed size. Then, I bent it with my hot air gun and cut the front and back corners in some angle to give a real look like CCTV cover.

As we have finished making all the parts, now is the time to apply some color on them.

Here, I first applied some wood primer the the box and our stand and finally some Silver spray paint to all of them.

Finally, I drilled two holes in the back of our box and in the top of stand and have added a piece of thick cable or wire (6mm) from the back of our box to the stand.

Now, that it looks like a real CCTV in working condition.

Then, At last I attached the top cover plate to the main box with the help of some double sided tape and sealed the front and back with some 2mm foam tape.

Finally is the time to install our CCTV Bird House to one of our trees.

Here I first carve out the tree surface a little bit so that it has a straight plane to have our stand onto it. And then I applied some glue and screwed the stand to that tree and put my bird house in there.

So, here's how our Bird House that is designed like a CCTV camera looks like. I think it's pretty cool and awesome looking and gives me so satisfaction when I look onto it.

It is very much looking like a vintage surveillance system, the design, the color and the aesthetic is fantastic.

This is one of best bird houses you can make your own in home and have one in your garden.
