What summer backyard is complete without chirping birds? And what better way to invite colorful wildlife into your yard than with seedy treats.

Birdseed cakes are fast and easy to make. They can be created from any variety of birdseed and can be made into many shapes and sizes!

What You'll Need

Ingredients:

3 c. birdseed

1/2 c. boiling water

3 tbsp light corn syrup

1 pkg unflavored gelatin

3/4 c. flour (whole wheat is best, but all purpose will work too)

You'll also need:

string (if you want to hang your cakes)

something to mold them in

and oil or non-stick spray (if you're not using flexible silicone molds)

Mixing

Add the boiling water and gelatin to a bowl. Stir until mostly/all is dissolved.

Next, add the corn syrup. And then the flour. Mix until you have a (somewhat) smooth mixture.

Then stir in the birdseed.

The entire mixing process needs to be done quickly, or the gelatin will start to set and turn the whole thing into a big, goopy mess.

Into the Molds

Press your mixture into your molds. If you're not using silicone molds, be sure to oil them first!

If you're adding string, fill your molds half way - add the string (making sure to leave a loop hanging over the side) and then fill it the rest of the way.

Press the mixture firmly into the molds

Set these in the fridge or freezer for several hours to firm up.

Tada!
