Book Nook - Star Wars Trench Run

For several months now i've been perfecting my 3d modelling skills to create suspended model.. where a model is suspended by strings from 3d printing and its floating and bridging on air from one end to another..

I've been making star wars ships that is suspended on these strings and some of them are quite famous.. You can find the files to 3d print them here..

So when instructables had the book nook contest.. i knew i was going to make the star wars famous trench run.. and using the suspended model technique..

Difficulty level:

1. 3D printing - Intermediate
2. Assembly - Easy 
3. Wiring - Easy
4. Painting - Nope - unnecessary

So let's get started..

As the same with a lot of my 3d printign instructable.. i use Tinkercad a lot for my 3d modelling and this project is fully 3d model using Tinkercad.. i already had the X-wing and Tie Interceptor from my previous project and only had to build the trench for the book nook..

the book nook is split into 2 parts..

1. the x-wing front book nook
2. the tie interceptor back book nook

both parts will be joined using 5 pegs that will be inserted in between the 2 parts

since i made the book nook in 2 parts with different fighter ships.. i could possible make more different design using different ships.. i could make the back fighter ship with tie-fighter or darth vader's tie-advance.. but that will have to wait since i need to finish this one first..

As i mention.. i 3d printed the book nook using BambuLab 3d printer and used their Bambu studio slicer..

There are some setting that needs to be changed in order for the strings that is floating and bridging the book nook to be printed.

In the quality tab under wall generator section.. the wall generator type needs to be change from classic to arachne.. this will tell the slicer to print even the thinnest layer of filaments.. since i set the suspended strings width the same as the standard 3d printing nozzle of 0.4mm and the layer height of the strings to 0.2mm..

Other print setting i just used the standard basic setting that the bambu studio has..

You could print this in single color filament but it will be hard to paint them as the ships are suspended by strings and very fragile.. so painting them is very hard and risk of snapping the strings are high.. you could only paint the outside book nook easily..

But if you print this in multicolor.. it would look as awesome as what i printed.. there are 4 color filament interchanging multicolor print and i already set the colors if you're printing them with bambu printers..

The multicolor print uses 4 filament color.. Black.. white.. red.. and grey..

To install the LED strips is quite simple.. you'll need around 60cm of LED strips..

You just need to run the LED through the channel on the front x-wing book nook.. Just follow the channel until it wraps around the whole book.. and you are done.. you could put a bit of glue if you want..

And just put the two halves of the book nook together and you are done..

The book nook looks awesome when printed using multicolor filaments.. Since you cant actually paint the suspended fighter ships without breaking the strings.. It took me a while to print them cause of the multicolor changing filament color..

Using the LED tailing animation only made it look more cool.. like the lasers are actually firing in the trench..

This was my second book nook and i hope to make more of them in the future.. i'm currently watching fallout on amazon prime and i got some ideas for a book nook..
