Bottle Filler Wand

Make a bottle filler wand! This is used to fill beer or wine bottles without spilling or aerating the fluid. I needed one for bottling day tomorrow, and didn't get time to hit the LHBS, so I made my own. I know they're only a few dollars new, but I'm the cheapest guy I know...

Materials you need:
1. The pump from a small hand soap bottle (make sure the pump housing will fit into the mouth of the bottles you wish to fill!)
2. 1/2" vinyl tubing
3. 10-32 x 1/2" pan head screw
4. Small o-ring to fit under the screw head
5. Racking cane or 1/2o.d. rigid tubing


Tools you need:
1. Sharp knife

This soap bottle came from Dollar Tree.

Pull the spout off of the pump. Force the rest of the pump down into the bottle until the top ring of the pump (1) comes off. Unscrew the bottle cap, and remove the pump from the bottle. All of the parts come out of the pump. Parts (2), (3), and (4) are all you need, recycle the rest.

The hole on the bottom of my pump was too small, and this worked out perfectly: Use the knife to cut around the bottom of the pump housing. You should end up with a hole about 5/16 of an inch.

Next, take a cut at the top end of the pump. I cut mine a bit short but it worked out. I recommend cutting as close below the ring I'm pinching in the photo.

Put the o-ring under the head of the screw. Insert the screw into the bottom of the pump. There should be room between the screw head and the insides of the pump housing so the beer can flow around.

Put the spring on top of the screw.

Cut a short piece (1/2-3/4") of the vinyl tube and push it into the top of the pump housing on top of the spring. There should be room for the spring to compress.

Lastly, insert the racking cane into the vinyl tube.

Voila!
