Broken Key to Striped Key With Sugru

I had been trying to find a cap or material to repair a broken car key so that it could be reattached to a keychain when I came across Sugru. You can use Sugru like a polymer clay to create decorate effects like stripes or millefiori. You will have about 30 minutes to work with the material before it will start to cure and set, depending on the temperature.

First you will need two packets of Sugru in contrasting colors. 

Remove the wrapper and place the Sugru on a flat, clean surface.

Roll out the Sugru until it is thin and flat. You can use a knife or spatula to remove it if it sticks to the work surface.

Use a sharp blade to cut the Sugru into long thin strips. You can roll these between your fingers to make coils. 

Piece the Sugru together, staggering the colors to make the pattern you want.

Roll out the Sugru so that the colors blend together and make a zebra pattern. Then remove it from the work surface with a knife or spatula.

Using your knife, cut the material into a rectangle as wide as the key and at least twice as long.

Bring the top of the rectangle down over the broken key and press the Sugru together at the ends.

Square up the sides of the rectangle and then smooth out or trim any lumps.

Using the end of a screwdriver, make a long square hole of the width you need.

Let the key take a rest overnight and allow time for the Sugru to cure. Then attach it to your keychain and your key is better than new.
