CLEANit : Plant Powered Air Purifying System
What is main reason that made me think of this project ?
According to the World Health Organization Polluted indoor air causes millions of deaths and diseases each year. (WHO report)
Many of us spend 90% of our time indoors, this leads to a deterioration caused by pollutants. In sum, these are significant negative factors for the immune system, the room air is therefore responsible for a number of diseases.
NASA identified 30 plants that provided particularly strong cleaning services - and even if you completely removed the leaves of these plants. Tests showed that the indoor air purification is done to over 90 percent by the root system of the plant.NASA created a list of the best plants for filtering out toxic elements from the air.(NASA report wiki) (NASA report).
So I designed this pot CLEANit. That purifies the air by passing polluted air through the 'Activated carbon' where pollutants are captured until microbes in root system use them as a food
Requirements
For making this pot go and collect the following items
- Bucket
- Flower pot
- Activated charcoal
- Server fan
- Any one indoor plant as suggested by NASA (Plants link)
- Stainless Steel Mesh
- Zip-Tags
- Arduino
- DTH 11
- Soil Moisture Sensor
- Bluetooth Module (HC-05)
- Adapter to power Arduino and server fan
Note: Choose the flower pot and bucket in such a way that flower pot should fit inside the bucket.
Making Bucket Ready
Now as specified in the requirements we need to take an bucket and cut in the desired shape as shown or you can even cut it in your own dimensions as sufficient to place the pot in that bucket, then at one side we should cut the bucket in a shape that a server fan can be placed in it and also a small hole to place an LED which shows the condition of the plant..
Making Pot Ready
Now a flower pot should be taken and make holes as shown, through which the air will be transmitted. Those holes should be covered with a Stainless Steel mesh with the help of zip tags not allowing the soil to go out of those holes. Now place the soil and activated charcoal in the pot. Now plant any one of the plants which are specified by the NASA (link). Here I used SPIDER plant.
Connections and Code
I used Arduino, DTH11, Soil moisture sensor and Bluetooth Module (HC-05) to monitor condition of the plant.
Arduino connections
DTH 11..........Arduino
VCC..............5V
Gnd...............Gnd
out ............... Digital pin 5
Soil Moisture...........Arduino
VCC..........................5V
Gnd...........................Gnd
Analog out.................Analog pin 1
HC-05 ........................Arduino
Tx...............................Digital pin 0
Rx..............................Digital pin 1
VCC...........................5V
Gnd............................Gnd
Fan should be connected directly to the dc power supply. I used AC to DC adapter to power arduino and fan. In an Android mobile i installed the application Bluetooth Serial Monitor to see the results After making the above connections glue them in their respective positions

Working
NOW OUR PROJECT IS READY!
When the power is supplied to the pot, the polluted air passes through activated charcoal and soil, where pollutants get captured, and purified air will come out through outlet fan. Captured pollutants is the food for microbes in the root system. The LED on the pot shows the condition of the plant (whether water is required or not). The DTH 11 sensor is used to monitor temperature and humidity of the room.In smartphone which is connected to pot via bluetooth we can see temperature and humidity.
Conclusion
You just need to place this plant in your home and switch on the pot then it starts its work.
Our purpose is to purify the indoor air which is justified with this project.
In the next update 'CLEANit version 2.0' I will add sensors to monitor the air quality and ESP-8266 to upload data to cloud instead of using bluetooth.
