Proper Maintenance
Usually, you want to keep the CPU in its socket. Very little maintenance is typically necessary. However:
-Regularly replace the thermal paste (the substance between the CPU and its fan) every few years.
-Ensure that your heatsink is working properly.
-Should you need to remove the processor, DON'T BEND THE PINS.
Troubleshooting
Scenarios:
Your computer powers on, then quickly shuts down.
-Remove & unplug the heatsink, and check the thermal paste. If it is cracked and dry, gently scrape it off with a paper towel dipped in rubbing alcohol. Then replace it with new thermal paste. (When applying thermal paste, you only need a drop the size of a pea.)
-If the thermal paste still works, check to see if the fan works.
Your computer powers on, but no image appears on-screen.
-Remove & unplug the heatsink, and check the CPU's pins. if one of them is bent, then you can attempt to straighten it out with pliers or similar apparatus. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a new processor.
If other issues arise, then it is likely a different component in your computer.
