The Can safe is great to store your valuables or your favorite spices or chocolates. Hide it among your other caned goods and no one will be the wiser. This simple build is easy to customize and made from very inexpensive parts.

Supplies

Everything you need:

  1. Can of your favorite caned goods. You can pick any size can you want. Depending on the amount of valuable goods you want to hide.
  2. One piece of wood that you can trim down to the size of your can.
  3. Hot-glue.
  4. Paper for label making if you so desire.

Tool you need:

  1. Cutter for you can. If you have a very good can opener you can use that. I used a dremel cutter. You could also use a hacksaw.
  2. Sander for sharp edges.
  3. Small hammer.
  4. Something to shape you piece of wood. I used a lathe, but a hole saw of the right size is also fine. You could even use a saw and some sandpaper.
  5. Drill or a drill press
  6. Hot-glue gun or other ways of applying some kind of adhesive.
  7. Printer for you label-making if you want to make your own label.

Stuff to hide in you Can safe.

Start with one can of your favorite caned food. Carefully cut the bottom of the can away. You can use a cutting tool like I did or a sharp can opener. A hack saw would also be just fine. If your going to use the label you have to be very careful not to get it wet so that it will not snow on the finished can.

Clean your can and dry it of carefully. Make sure to keep the label dry.

DO NOT EAT THE FOOD FROM THE CAN. IT MIGHT CONTAIN METAL SHAVINGS FROM YOUR CUTTING. Unless you use a can opener.

Clean Up the Edges

Clean up the edges of your can and lid. Make sure that they are not sharp to the touch.

If needed (depending on how you cut your can) you might need to straiten the edge of the can. I did this with a few soft taps with a small hammer.

Make You Bottom Insert

Pick a piece of wood to use as the bottom insert. Shape the peace using a method of your choosing. I used a lathe to round it of until it fit snuggly inside the can. This can take some trying out.

You can also use a hole saw for this. Try to get as close to the size of the inside of the can and then sand your way to a snug fit.

Drill Holes in Your Bottom Insert

I drilled holes using a drill press in to my bottom piece. This depends on the thickness of your bottom piece and what your going to put in your safe. I put two different sizes of holes in mine but this step can be skipped.

Glue Bottom Insert to the Bottom of the Can

After fitting you can perfectly glue the bottom insert to the bottom of the can. Make sure that the pieces fit well together.

Try opening the can a few times. The bottom should come out with out a lot of force but remain in the can if it is lifted up.

Enjoy Your Creation
