Catacomb Wall Decor

This is a 3 day project.

One day to build the frame, cut the foam and carve the stones.
Another day to paint the first layer.
And lastly, a day to detail!

Build Your Frame

Decide how large you want your feature wall piece to be. For me, I wanted 2ft tall by 91 inches long.
Use 2x2s to frame your choice of plywood, we used 1/4 inch thick.

Next, measure the remaining space and cut a piece of insulation to fit inside.

Using a strong adhesive made for foam, zig zag the glue onto the wood and insert the foam over top to bond.

Time to Trace & Carve

We bought skulls from Fright Props and Spirit Halloween, sawed them in half and then lied them down to trace where we wanted to insert the skulls.

After you trace the skulls, start to carve that area out as well as carve your stones using a small electric router tool. We purchased ours at Home depot for $50.

We chose irregular shaped stones but this process works the same for bricks and symmetrical stones too.

Heat Gun & Glue Your Skulls

Using a heat gun, found at most hardware stores, hold the gun about 1.5-2 inches away from your foam panel and begin to distress the stones.

Now use the same adhesive to glue the skulls into the areas you carved out for them. We also used an additional glue to make it very sturdy.

Add Vines

Using spray foam insulation, spray the foam in the shape of vines.

Be sure you test one on a spare piece of wood, the foam can vary in it's speed coming out.

Paint

You've done all the hard work, now it's time to paint.

Start with the inner grout lines.

Then move onto the rocks.

Detailing

Almost done!

You may have spilled paint from the rocks into the grout, just go back and touch up the grout lines if needed.

Paint the vines brown.

We added some brown and black paint, about a tablespoon of each, into a small spray bottle with water and sprayed the entire wall. This gives some texture and ages the rocks too!

You're all done! I hope you enjoyed the guide and can easily make your own!
