Chalk Paint for Chalkboard Art
This is a tutorial for how to make chalkboard paint, or liquid chalk for using on chalkboards. Its applied with a paintbrush.
Needed Things
You will need:
- Rubbing Alcohol (Isopropanol)
- chalk (I used cheap art chalk from walmart with different colors so I could mix them to make more colors!)
- small cup to mix it in
- something to file off the chalk, I used a screw because I didn't want to ruin my nail file!
- paint brush
Getting Chalk Dust
Use whatever tool you choose to file off some chalk dust into your mixing cup.
I just took the shaft of a screw and rubbed the end of the stick of chalk.
Add Rubbing Alcohol
Add a few drops of rubbing alcohol to your chalk powder.
If you want it thick, add only a couple of drops and mix with your paint brush. If you want it a little thinner add more alcohol. If you add too much, don't worry! It evaporates pretty quickly so you can let it dry out a bit!
Thinner: doesn't go on AS bright (a little transparent), may run if not painitng on perfectly flat surface
Thicker: goes on very bright (opaque), does usually have chunks and get a less even line/spread
Paint!
Paint your newly mixed chalk paint onto your chalk board. At first it will look dull/wet/dim/dark ect. but give a few minutes to dry and it will brighten up!
Unless you are the Flash, the paint will probably dry up a bit before you're done using it. Just add more rubbing alcohol as needed! Viola!
