This instructable tutorial will demonstrate a method for changing electric guitar strings. This guide is specific to models with a tremolo bridge, but other models are very similar.

Supplies

We will need an electric guitar, a new set of strings, and wire cutters for this endeavor.

If you don't have any of these items already,

-An electric guitar can cost anywhere between $100-$5000

-Elixir strings utilized in this video are $15.99

-Hart wire cutters are $8.00.

Safety Disclaimer

It is very easy to poke your finger tips when inserting the string into the post. Also, if too much tension is applied to the string and it snaps, it can cause lacerations in some cases. Proceed with each step cautiously, use your hands and your tools carefully, and you should be safe.

Unpack the New Strings

Just make sure they are all there and then place them somewhere accessible to you, and avoid mixing them up with each other. The thinner strings are easy to lose, especially in carpet.

Removing the Current Strings From Tuning Post

Carefully unwind the strings by turning the tuner until the string is loose enough to be removed. Alternately, the string can simply be clipped by the wire cutters.

Removing the Strings Through the Body

On this style of guitar, the strings are routed through the back of the guitar, and held in place by a block. Carefully push the string through the body until it comes through the other side of the guitar.

Guide each string through the back of the guitar until it emerges from the front. Once the string is through, guide it toward the headstock.

Cut the String to the Appropriate Length

Strings are shipped with excess length to suit multiple types of guitars. A good guideline is to pull the string to the tuner it will go in, and then cut it to a length two tuner-lengths further. This will leave enough slack to pull the string around the tuner.

Attach New String to Tuning Post

Insert the string into the slot in the tuner post and wrap it around. Keep in mind the direction you wind the string will determine how the tuner increases or decreases tension on the string. Do not focus on tuning the string all the way to pitch until all strings are securely attached.

Tune to Pitch

Once they are attached, use a tuner app, a tuner pedal, or your own ears if you can, and tune the guitar to pitch (EADGBe).
