Okay, today i'm gonna show you how to make a good looking Hylian Shield (+ sword) from Zelda for less than 15$. We will start with a look on the material to use :

  • 2 foam sheets
  • Felt pen
  • Paper
  • Exacto
  • Heavy weight (or other heavy objects)
  • Paint
  • Water
  • Screw caps
  • Hot glue

Sword :

  • Cardboard
  • Newspaper
  • Paper Mache stuff

Model and Cutting

For the shield of Zelda, you can easily find a model on the internet. Draw the model on a paper (You can already draw the 3D border of the shield, like in the picture). This model is then drawn on the first foam sheet. After that, cut according to your drawing. Then, repeat the operation for the border on the second foam sheet.

Bend the Shield

To bend the foam shield you will need to apply a little bit of water on the entire surface of the foam. Put a heavy object on it and let it dry about 6 hours.

Elements of the Shield

On the shield there is the triforce. To make it, I made a triangle model like in the pictures (origami style). Alongside the triforce, you will need to improvise a little bit to make the model. For the Hylian family crest (bird), I simply printed it on a normal paper.

Paint and Glue Everything

According to your taste, paint the shield and the elements. After that, glue everything together.

Details : As you can see on the model picture, there is 3 button on the border of the shield. I use some screw caps to do it.

Sword (Model and Cutting)

For the sword, find a model on the internet and print it. Draw it on some cardboard and cut it. There should be two layers of cardboard for the long part and 4 for the handle.

Sword Handle

For the handle you will need to cut the parts of the handle on the printed model and cut them on cardboard. Glue everything together. Maybe you will need to improvise a little bit in this step.

Paper Mache and Sword

I used a cheap recipe of Paper Mache to harden the sword. (You can simply Google ''Recipe paper mache"). Everything will be explained.

Paint the Sword

Paint everything.

For the yellow part at the bottom of the handle, I use wood to make it. I cut a diamond shape and sand it for a "pyramidal" effect.

Bonus : Captain America

I did the same steps but with the WWII Captain America shield.

An easy DIY project for everyone for cheap. You can make almost any shield with foam. Hope you enjoyed it, any comment is welcome.
