With this game you can play chess, if you can, but you can also play with blocks, to build a castle or something like this.
It is made of scrap wood and the only tool you need is a table saw.
The Pieces
All pieces are 24 mm x 24 mm x (height)
King (78 mm ), Queen (78 mm ), Rook (54 mm ), Bishop (54 mm ), Knight (54 mm ), Pawn (24 mm ) ,
The white and black squares are 54 mm x 54 mm x 24 mm
The King
All cuts were made with a crosscut sled on a table saw
First cut 4 pieces in length (King and Queen are equal)
then cut a little cross in the top
and a little slot around the "head" . Make this for the Queens too.
The Queen
The Queen has the same size as the king and the same slot on her neck.
She has a little pyramid on the top.
To cut these, I put a little board on my crosscut sled and fixed it with staples.
The Rook
The cross on the top of the rook is wider than from the King
It needs 6 cuts to make it.
The Bishop
For the bishop, I used two little boards to support the work piece and to make the cut in a safe way.
The Knight
If you want to play more with the blocks to build something then it is the best only to make one cut in a block under 45°. If you prefer to play chess then you can make it thinner in the upper part.
The Pawn
The pawn is very simple. It is only a cube.
The Squares
Normally you cut a board in stripes and then the stripes in squares.
I used many small pieces of scrap wood and cut each piece separately.
Sanding
Yes, it is a lot of sanding, more than 1000 edges.
Stain and Oil
I used water stain for the black pieces
and linseed oil for finish
The Result
Now play what ever you want.
Your kids will love it, maybe a whole life long.
If you like it, I am glad if you vote for it in the "EPILOG CONTEST 8"
