Chris' Oak Octagon Cage and Cabinet

Here is a beautiful Oak Octagon Bird Cage and Cabinet. The cage measures 60 inches tall and the cabinet is 18 inches tall, making this an impressive 6 1/2 feet in height. It features a screen covered slide out drawer, four access doors, four Friendly Feeders and perches, and the inside wood is acrylic covered to protect the wood from chewing. I have made push pins to secure all the doors. These should keep even the greatest escape artist from opening the doors. Six casters provide easy movement and excellent support for this 180 pound enclosure.

1) Find the six casters and silver pan head screws, and the 1/2" plywood bottom cabinet piece. Attach the casters using the predrilled holes in the wood blocks.

2) You will see eight cabinet panels marked "A" through "H". You will also see the bottom plywood piece is marked where panel "A" is attached. In the 3rd picture, it shows the predrilled holes in the plywood and in the lower crossbar of the panel. This crossbar slips under the plywood and is attached using three 1 1/4" screws. 4th picture shows the screws in place, and the fifth picture shows how the panel stands when attached.

3) Work your way clockwise with the remaining panels "B" through "H" making sure top edges are even with each other, meaning that the bottom plywood is snug against the bottom crossbars.

4) Using 1" screws, attach the top 1/4" plywood top cabinet piece similar to how you attached the bottom plywood. It is also marked which edge is attached to panel "A". You will now build the cage on top of the base.

The Plexiglass panels are marked with the corresponding letter of the wood panel that they attach to. The blue marking tape is on the side of the panel that faces inside the cage and the edge that is closest to the top of the panel. You can remove the outside protective sheet that covers the acrylic, then place the acrylic sheet on the wood panel. You will use the 1/2" black pan head screws to attach to the panel. Line up the predrilled holes, then you can remove the inside protective sheet as you secure each screw. The panels are marked "A" through "H" for the bottom level panels, and "AA" through "HH" for the upper level. There are, of course, four upper panels that have stainless steel and not acrylic

There are four feeders and I have marked them for which panel they attach to. The blue tape is facing up. there should be a washer on either side of the acrylic, then tighten the wingnut.

There are two sizes of feeders. I have the small feeders on the door panels and the large feeders on the stationary panels. The hardware is in its own bag, and it was one screw and connector short. So you can short on of the large feeders a set, since they have six holes but really four will work. The flat connector is on the inside of the panel and the screw attaches from the outside. There are two pieces to the actual feeder. Of course, the piece with the food dish goes on the outside. See the pictures for reference.

1) Place the bottom of the cage onto the cabinet as shown in the first picture. It is overhanging on the left edge because Panel "A" of the cage attaches there. Picture two shows how you will attach Panels "A" through "E". Two 2" screws come from under the bottom piece into each panel using the predrilled holes. Just overhang each edge for that panel. The third picture shows the five panels attached.

2) There are 1 1/4" screws that attach the panels to each other using predrilled holes in the side bars of the panels. One screw about halfway up the panel, and the other just below the top crossbar.

3) Once the five panels are attached center the bottom of the cage over the cabinet and secure it with two 1 5/8" screws as shown in picture four.

4) Now slide the drawer and screen cover in place (fifth picture). Now to attach panels F, G, and H.

5) Find panel "G" and find the stabilizer bar (Pic. 6). It attaches to the bottom crossbar of that panel with two 1 5/8" screws.

6) Find the two small plexiglass pieces marked "spacer" and lay them on the drawer. (Pic 7) Place panel "F" on them and attach to panel "E" using three 1 1/4" screws through the predrilled holes in the door frame of "F".

7) Attach panel "G" to "F" the same way, moving the spacers under that panel and coming from the door frame of "F".

8) Picture 8 shows how to attach the stabilizer bar to panel "F" using one 1 1/4" screw. You will attach the other side to panel "H" once you attach that panel to "G" and "A". (Pic. 9)

9) Picture 10 shows how everything should look so far.

The upper panels attach to each other the same as the lower panels with the following addition. Place panel "AA" on top of panel "A" and secure it with two 1 5/8" screws coming from the top of panel "A" into the bottom of "AA". (Pic. 1)

Then follow with the remaining panels, making sure to attach 1 1/4" screws to the sides of each panel. You will end with panel "HH" as shown in picture 2.

Picture 3 shows the marking in the top octagon piece to show the front edge, which in this case, is panel "GG". Use 1 1/4" screws to secure from the top crossbars of panels "BB", "DD", "FF", and "HH" into the top piece. (Pic 4)
