Colour Changing Tentacle Monster

finni1.JPG
I bought a couple of light up pumpkins cheap after halloween, and I've been trying to think of something to do with the colour changing lights from inside them ever since.  Heres what I came up with!

Tools and Marterials

Heres what you'll need to make one for yourself:

Furry Material (ideally a light colour)
• Thread
• Sewing Needle
• Teddy Eyes
• Pins
• Wire
• Polymer Clay
• Pliers
• All Purpose Glue
• Knife
• Paint
• Light unit

Getting Started!

First of all, you'll need to make some tentacles!
Bend some wire to make tentacle shapes (see pictures).  I'm using aluminium/aluminum wire, which is easy to bend, and holds its shape well.  When you shape one tentacle, curve the wire round and mirror it to make another tentacle.
The number of sets of tentacles to make will depend on the size of the light unit.  I found three sets worked well for mine.

Shape the Tentacles

Roll out a piece of clay into a long 'worm', a little longer and fatter than the wire.  Press it flat, and then wrap it around the wire.  Once the wire is covered, gently smooth out the seam of the clay.

Repeat this on the other tentacles.

Next, you have two choices.  You can either glue the tentacles straight onto the light unit, or you can build a base to attatch the tentacles to, and sit the light unit on top.  If you are going to glue the tentacles on the base, now it's time to bake them.  Once baked, you can paint them how you like. I decided to leave mine unpainted,

If you decide to go with the second option, as I did, you will need to roll a ball of clay and squash it so its the same width as the light unit.  Attatch the tentacles to the bottom of it, (see pictures).  Now, bake them.  Once baked, you can paint them how you like.

Make the Body

Now the tentacles are done, its time to make the body.

Measure a strip of material that will fit around you base.  Mine measured 5" by 3".  Pin it inside out, folding over the top of the strip (See pictures).  Sew along the pinned edge.
Next, attatch the eyes, and the top of the body, so it bunches up.
Turn him the proper way out, and the body is done!

All you need to do now is turn on the light, and slide the body overthe light unit/base!
If you decided to glue the tantacles to the base, you may as well glue the body to the unit as well.

And there you have it, a colour changing tentacle monster!
