We've said it before and we'll say it again... The Dover Public Library loves crafting and all things geeky. For our June Build Night we combined the two. Inspired by comic books, we used a Silhouette Portrait machine to create sound effect headbands!

You Will Need:

  • Silhouette Machine
  • Foam Paper (have at least three colors, you can pick up a variety at any craft store)
  • Pen
  • Scissors
  • Tacky Glue
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • A headband (we found some great ones at Dollar General)

Create Your Stencil

You can absolutely use your Silhouette Machine to cut the foam paper. However, we found that the edges were a little rougher than we liked so we decided to create stencils on card stock and cut the foam with scissors.

To Create the Stencil:
Open your image library.
Double click on the image you would like to load it onto your work space.
Ungroup the image and adjust accordingly.
Adjust the blade to the appropriate level.
Send to the printer

Cut the Shapes

Once the machine has finished cutting the paper, carefully remove it from the cutting mat.
Place the stencil on the foam sheet and trace the outline (We traced the shapes backwards so that the pen marks would not accidentally show through).
Cut the Shapes. Scissors will work for outside of the shapes but you may want to use an X-Acto knife for the inside of the letters.

Assemble Your Sound Effect

Apply tacky glue to the back of the foam pieces and press down.

Attach to Headband

Once the glue has dried, take a headband and mark where you would like the sound effect to rest on the back of the foam. Apply hot glue between the lines you have marked. Press the head band onto the hot glue and hold until it cools (careful not to burn your fingers).

And you're done! You know have your own unique headband to wear!
