Comparing Some HO Scale Locomotives in the GP Series
Hi guys this will be about comparing some of my ho scale locomotives. All 4 are in the GP series, some of which are almost the same alike. There are only a couple differences between the GP's that I have. The list:
- CSX 890 - GP9M
- CSX 6825 - GP40
- Conrail 3635 - GP35
- Chessie System - 4810 GP38
All may look the same, but don't be 100% sure they are all exactly the same. They have a couple differences. These steps will explain some difference. So, get ready!

Company Based
The company may not be very important to distinguishing the contrasts of the locomotives, but I will give some company names for building locomotives:
- Walthers
- Life-like
- Bachmann
- Athern (not 100% sure)
- Tyco
- Mantua
I think that is all, that I know of. Only 3 of the 4 that are here have a company listed. I think the Conrail 3635 is a Walthers type, after a bit of searching.

Comparing Noses of the Locomotives
One of the differences to tell from GP locomotives are the noses.
- GP35's, like the Conrail 3635, has more of a 1 inch by 1 inch nose.
- GP9M's, like the CSX 890, has more of a 1.25 inch by 1 inch nose
- GP40's, like the CSX 6825, has more of a 1 & 1/8 inch by (guessing) 2/3 of an inch wide. Pls correct me if I am wrong on this one.
- GP38's, like the Chessie System 4810, has more of a 1 inch by (also guessing) also 3/4 of an inch. Correct me if I am wrong again.
I am not too good at looking at the small lines between the whole numbers. The Conrail 3635 measurement is just an example of what the measurement is like. I didn't want to take 3 other measurements and hold the camera with one hand at the same time.

Length
The CSX 6825 and the Chessie System 4810 are the same length. CSX 890 and Conrail 3635 are slightly different. 3635 is not even a centemeter longer.
With different GP's could come in different lengths. BTW, I tried to take the lengths as best as I could.

Fans on Top
You may notice that there are locomotive fans on top of it. I learned a bit that the fans on the top of the locomotive lets you tell what kind it is. With the types I have and of what I know:
- GP9M's have 4 fans
- GP35's have also 4 fans
- GP38's have 3 fans
- GP40's have as well 4 fans
Other types of GP's have possibly the same amount of fans as others, as you can quite tell out of the 4 here. All pics are in order as listed above.

Similarities
All GP's can have a couple things in common. For example:
- Company (only some will have the same company. Lots of GP's come from different companies)
- Wheel configuration (all of my GP's have a total of 8 axles, 4 front, 4 rear)
- Couplers (knuckle couplers or the other kind. Don't know what it's called)
- Light locations (most will have lights in the same places as others do)
- Wheel types (either has all metal wheels, mostly metal and some with rubber, or all rubber. This is only for most GP's)
I think that's about it for similarities. With the pic shown here, the similarity is the trucks. All 4 have 4 wheels in the front and rear of the locomotive.

End
This is the end of comparing HO scale locomotives. See you guys "knex" time!
