Computer Repair Partitioning and Formatting Guide

In this Instructable we will be teaching you how to properly partition and format a volume in Windows 10, Windows 7-8, and Command Prompt.

Navigate to the Desktop

Go to the Start Bar in the bottom left corner and type "Computer Management" into the search area.

On the left hand Column find Disk Management and click on it.

Find the Unallocated Space and right click it the select the "New Simple Volume" tab that popped up.

If you don't have Unallocated Space create some free space by shrinking the volume.

New Simple Volume Wizard will show up, Navigate through it.

Enter in the Volume Size that you want. We chose 20000 for the size.

Keep the settings Default and NTFS, put the label or name for the Partition. You can choose to have a quick partition or the Enable file and folder compression.

Once done with the setup and it has been created you can look into the partition to make sure everything is fine.

Click on the Format this volume with the following settings: For File System, select NTFS For Allocation unit size, select Default For Volume Label, type the name you wish to give your new drive. Click on the Perform a quick format.

However there is an alternate way including the Command Prompt. This requires you to go into the DISKPART area of CMD.

Use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu and select Command Prompt (Admin).

type "diskpart" into the cmd command line.

Type "list disk" to list all the available drives and press Enter
