Cork Trivet

So after I got home yesterday from Bed Bath and Beyond I realized I had forgotten something. I didn't have anything to put my kettle on! I like our counter tops so I don't want to damage them. Thus - I re-purposed wine bottle corks into a Trivet.

My kettle is fairly small so I decided not to make a big one.

I'm using approximately 14 corks. I picked the corks specifically because they are all similar in length.

Then I have my trusty hot glue gun and wax paper to protect the surface I'm working on .

I laid out my pattern first, since I didn't know exactly what I wanted it to look like. I decided to go simple after playing with some more complicated designs because I chose to use hot glue.

First, I glue the ends together on the center trunks.

Then, I laid a bead of glue along the length of the cork and one end and pressed it into place along the center trunks.

I allowed my glue to dry for a couple hours before using. This ensures that the glue is completely set. After all, it does melt when exposed to heat!

This seems to fit my kettle well. It even fits some of my smaller pots. It won't fit my big skillets, so I guess I'll be making another in the future.
