Cozy Chunky Knitted Hat
This hat knits up super quick and is my go-to pattern for last-minute presents or even donations for local shelters. The hats pictured here are both going to be donated to the local women's shelter after proving to be excellent models for this Instructable.
Abbreviations:
K = Knit
P = Purl
K2tog = Knit two stitches together (Here is a link to a demonstration of this stitch)
SSK = Slip, slip, knit (Here is a link to a demonstration of this stitch)
Supplies
- 140 yards of bulky/chunky weight yarn (I used Eco-Cozy by Loops and Threads, purchased at Michael's)
- One US 8 16" circular needle, one US 9 16" circular needle, and a set of needles in US 9 used to close the crown of the hat (double-pointed needles, a 32" or 40" needle for magic loop, or two shorter needles for the two-needle method)
- Notions: a stitch marker, a tapestry needle, scissors, and a measuring tape
Step 1: Casting On
Using the smaller circular needle (US 8), cast on 72 stitches using your preferred stretchy cast-on method (I used the tubular cast-on, which you can see a demonstration of using this link)
Step 2: the Brim
Join in the round, careful not to twist your stitches and place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
Round 1: *K1, P1, repeat from * to end of the round.
Repeat Round 1 until the brim measures 3" from the cast-on edge, or desired length.
Step 3: the Body
Switch to your larger circular needle (US 9).
Round 1: Knit all stitches.
Round 2: *K1, P1, repeat from * to the end of the round.
Repeat Round 1 and 2 until hat measures 9" from cast-on edge, or desired length.
Step 4: the Crown
You'll be working decreases in this section to shape the crown of the hat, while also still working the stitch pattern between the decreased stitches. Switch to your preferred crown decreasing needle selection at any point in these decreases, once the stitches become too tight around the 16" circular needle.
Round 1: *k2tog, k14, ssk, repeat from * to the end of the round (8 stitches decreased).
Round 2: (k1, *k1, p1, repeat from * 7 times, k1) repeat 4 times total.
Round 3: *k2tog, k12, ssk, repeat from * to the end of the round (8 stitches decreased).
Round 4: (k1, *p1, k1, repeat from * 6 times, k1) repeat 4 times total.
Round 5: *k2tog, k10, ssk, repeat from * to the end of the round (8 stitches decreased).
Round 6: (k1, *k1, p1, repeat from * 5 times, k1) repeat 4 times total.
Round 7: *k2tog, k8, ssk, repeat from * to the end of the round (8 stitches decreased).
Round 8: (k1, *p1, k1, repeat from * 4 times, k1) repeat 4 times total.
Round 9: *k2tog, k6, ssk, repeat from * to the end of the round (8 stitches decreased).
Round 10: (k1, *k1, p1, repeat from * 3 times, k1) repeat 4 times total.
Round 11: *k2tog, k4, ssk, repeat from * to the end of the round (8 stitches decreased).
Round 12: (k1, *p1, k1, repeat from * 2 times, k1) repeat 4 times total.
Round 13: *k2tog, k2, ssk, repeat from * to the end of the round (8 stitches decreased).
Round 14: (k2, p1, k1) repeat 4 times total.
Round 15: *k2tog, ssk, repeat from * to the end of the round (8 stitches decreased) (8 stitches remaining).
Step 5: Finishing
After last decrease round, cut the yarn, leaving a 12" tail. Using the tapestry needle, thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to cinch shut.
Weave in the ends and cut off any excess yarn.
Block if desired.
Wear proudly!
