Project description

In this activity you will follow along with the steps to create a simple house shape. After completing this activity, you will be let loose to create your own unique design or personalize your house further on your own. Begin to learn the basics of how Architects design a house by creating a simple floor plan from the house you create.

Introduction

Lesson 1 - Step 1.png

The first step in design is to visualize the steps required to complete the house shape seen below.

Let's start by evaluating the components that make up the house design.

Instructions

  1. When looking at the image above, several characteristics should stand out.

  2. The red rectangular shape that make the walls.

  3. The green triangular shape that makes the roof.

  4. The arched doorway.

  5. Through the arched doorway you can see that the building is hollow.

  6. Continue to next step.

Create the Outer Shape of the House

Lesson 1 - Step 2.png

The first step in design is to visualize the steps required to complete the house shape seen below.

Let's start by evaluating the components that make up the house design.

Instructions

  1. Place a Box on the Workplane and size it to be 40mm by 20mm and 10mm tall.
  2. Continue to the next step.
  3. Stuck?

Hint: Remember, you can hover over any of the white dots on the model to double check the dimensions of the block.

Create the Shape to Hollow Out the House

Lesson 1 - Step 3.png

The first step in design is to visualize the steps required to complete the house shape seen below.
Let's start by evaluating the components that make up the house design.

Instructions

  1. Click on the red Box to select it.

  2. Select Duplicate from the Edit menu near the top left of the screen.

This will make an exact copy of the block in the exact same position.

  3. Use the black dots on the model to shrink the shape 1mm in every direction.

  4. Use the white dot on the top to increase the height several millimeters.

The change in the height is simply to help with shape selection, by making the smaller Box taller it can be easily selected because it sticks up above the original Box shape. The results should look like the image above.

  5. Continue to the next step.

Hollow Out the House

Lesson 1 - Step 5.png

Once the model is properly positioned properly, the inner shape can be used to cut material out of the original Box shape. This cut will hollow out the house and essentially create all the walls at once.

If one shape is set to be a hole and another object is not, grouping the objects together will cause the hole object to remove material from the other objects it is grouped with.

Instructions

  1. Select the inner block and use the Inspector dialog in the upper right of the graphics window to change the shape from red to a Hole. When complete, the inner block will be transparent, like the image above.

  2. Select both shapes and click the Group button on the menu bar at the top right of the screen.

The result of grouping the inner and outer shape is shown in the image below.

  3. Continue to the next step.

Continue to the Next Lesson

In the next lesson you will learn how to build the shape that will hollow out the walls of the house.
