Custom Gift Wrapper From Typography
Gift wrapping is an essential part of the gifting experience, adding an element of surprise and joy even before the recipient opens the present. In this project, we explored the typography to custom gift wrappers. The objective was to blend the art of type design with the that of wrapping paper, resulting in a collection of gift wraps that are both aesthetically pleasing and meaningful. Inspiration was drawn from various typographic styles, including modern, vintage, minimalist, and ornate fonts. We experimented with various layout techniques, such as repeating patterns, typographic illustrations, and letter-based motifs. Colors were chosen to complement the typography, with a focus on creating harmonious and eye-catching designs.
Supplies
For this project, you'll need a graphic design tool such as Illustrator, Photoshop, Figma, Canva, or a similar application, along with a selection of fonts. While we used IBM Serif for this particular design, feel free to choose any font that suits your preference.
And don't forget to bring along your creativity!
Creating the Super Unit
In our design, we utilized the number 3 as a foundational element to create the super unit of the pattern. By experimenting with various typographic styles and sizes, we transformed the simple numeral into a versatile design motif. Repeatedly arranging the number 3 in different orientations and alignments, we developed intricate patterns that form the core of the gift wrap design. This approach not only highlights the aesthetic potential of typographic elements but also demonstrates how a single character can be creatively expanded to produce visually captivating and cohesive patterns. Additionally, the strategic use of negative space between the number 3s added depth and complexity to the design.
Repeat the Super Unit to Create the Pattern
To create an eye-catching pattern for the gift wrapper, we repeated the super unit made from the number 3. This repetition helped us form a cohesive and visually appealing design that covered the entire surface smoothly. By arranging the super units in various configurations, we kept the pattern interesting and balanced.
The combination of repeated motifs and careful use of negative space resulted in a complex yet harmonious texture that adds depth and elegance to the wrapper. This approach not only unified the design but also made it versatile, suitable for different occasions and themes. The final pattern, with its rhythmic consistency and graceful interplay of forms, transformed the gift wrapper into a piece of art.
Fin
In conclusion, after designing and perfecting our typography-inspired gift wrapper, the next step is the printing phase. The final design can be printed on high quality paper to realize the wrappers.
To demonstrate the appeal of our gift wrappers, we created mockups of wrapped gifts, highlighting how the patterns enhance the presentation of various packages. These mockups allowed us to visualize the practical application of our designs and provided a compelling way to showcase their potential to customers and stakeholders. Overall, this project successfully combined the art of typography with the functionality of gift wrapping, resulting in a product that is both beautiful and meaningful.
