Customizable Knit Mittens

Mittens are a fast and useful project. This pattern allows you to customize them to your exact measurements and use whatever yarn you have lying around. This project can also be made with scrap yarn to make a funky striped pattern.

Supplies

- 75-200 yards worsted weight yarn

- US size 7 circular needles OR double pointed needles

- Tapestry needle

- Scissors

- Stitch markers

Step 1: Cast On

Using the long-tail cast-on method, cast on an even number of stitches that will fit comfortably around your wrist and upper forearm.

Step 2: Wristband

Join the ends of the cast-on together to create a loop, making sure there are no twists in the row. Place a stitch marker at the beginning of the round.

Row 1: *Knit 1, purl 1, repeat from * to end of the round.

Repeat row 1 until the wristband reaches your desired length.

Step 3: Making the Hand

When the wristband reaches your desired length, stop knitting in the 1x1 rib pattern. Begin knitting all rounds until the mitten reaches the base of your thumb.

Step 4: Making the Thumb Gusset

When the mitten reached the base of your thumb, begin the gusset.

Row 1: Knit until 2 stitches before the midpoint on your mitten. Place a stitch marker. Knit 4 stitches after the marker and place another marker. Knit until the end of the round.

Row 2: Knit until the first stitch marker and pass it to the other needle. Knit 1, M1R (make 1 right), knit until the last stitch before the second stitch marker, M1L (make 1 left), knit 1. Pass the stitch marker, then knit until the end of the round.

Row 3: Knit.

Repeat row 2-3 until the thumb gusset is big enough to close around your thumb. End on a knit row.

Step 5: Knitting the Rest of the Hand

Knit until the first stitch marker for the thumb. Remove the stitch marker and put the thumb stitches onto a placeholder. Do not knit the thumb stitches. Knit the rest of the round.

Continue knitting all rounds until the mitten reaches the top of your pinky.

Step 6: Top Decreases

Decrease as follows:

Round 1: *knit 6, knit 2 together* until the round finishes

Round 2: knit

Round 3: *knit 5, knit 2 together* until the round finishes

Round 4: knit

round 5: *knit 4, knit 2 together* until the round finishes

round 6: knit

round 7: *knit 3, knit 2 together* until the round finishes

round 8: knit

round 9: *knit 2, knit 2 together* until the round finishes

round 10: *knit 1, knit 2 together* until the round finishes

round 11: *knit 2 together* until the round finishes

Break yarn, leaving an end of 8-12 inches. Thread onto a tapestry needle. Working from right to left, transfer the remaining stitches onto the tapestry needle and pull yarn through.
