Cute, Woven Bookmark With a Secret!

This craft was a blast to make, and it will prove to be especially helpful to the bookworms out there, who can never seem to find a bookmark when they need one most... Plus, there is a rewarding little secret at the end for any of you who make this!

Supplies

  • 3 Strands of Yarn (15+ inches)
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Scissors
  • Colored String
  • Tape (very helpful)
  • Jewelry Jump Ring
  • Beads and Other Findings

Start the Knot

Tie a big knot attaching the three strands of yarn together. Make sure this knot is not too far down from the top, or your bookmark will not be long enough.

Weave

Tape the string above the knot to a table so your bookmark doesn't shift around while you are making it. Weave it in a friendship bracelet pattern, taking strand #1, making a "4" over strand #2, then pulling it under and around to make a knot. Repeat this with #1 now tying around #3. #1 should be the last strand now going from left to right. #2 should be the left-most string. Repeat this whole process with whichever string is the left-most string (after #1, it would be #2, then #3).

Tassel

Take your string, and cut a piece off that is 40-45 inches long. Fold it in half 5 times and tie another, smaller strand around the middle. Hot glue around the middle so that it stays in place. Now, with scissors, cut the end that was not part of the final fold in order to make the tassel-like fringes.

Bookmark Prep

If your bookmark twisted up in the weaving process, tape both ends (straightly and tightly) to a table. Hot glue along whatever side is exposed to minimize the twisting. After that is done, cut off the loose ends and hot glue them so that nothing comes undone.

Attach the Tassel and Findings

Open the jump ring, thread it through the middle of the tassel, and attach it to the knot of the bookmark. At the other end, hot glue a medium-sized bead (it should be bigger than the jump ring).

Its the Secret!!!!

The secret is that your bookmark also doubles as a trendy anklet! To do this, open the jump ring (without letting the tassel fall off!) and put the other end inside of it (don't hook the jump ring onto any strings, just put the strand within the jump ring's circle). Close the jump ring. If you have been successful, the bead should hold everything in an ankle/bracelet position! Enjoy!
