DIY Beer Glass Engraving - Lord of the Rings
Supplies
Materials:
- Glasses - I used Pilsner glasses from Ikea. Here's a link.
- Your printed designs
Tools:
- Rotary tool like a Dremel
- Some small diamond tip rotary tool bits
- Dust mask
- Tape
- Blu-tack
- Water and cloth
Prepare Design and Glass
Print and cut your designs. Make sure to print them the right size to fit in your glass.
Once cut out tape them to the inside of your glass. You will use this as a template to trace over with the rotary tool.
Use some blu-tack to help secure your glass to a workbench.
Start Engraving
In these pictures i just used the rotary tool however you can also get a smaller flexable arm attachement to make it easier to hold.
Attach a small diamond tip bit to your rotary tool.
It's not as hard as it looks. Just start etching. It's a good idea to try it on an old glass first. You will quickly get the hang of it.
This makes quite a bit of glass dust so be sure to wear a dust mask and wipe away any dust with a cloth dipped in water.
Take your time and trace all of the outlines on your design.
Peel Off Your Template
It is a bit hard to see your etching with the template still on but when you peel it off the engraving really comes to life.
Don't forget to give it a wash to remove any left over dust.
Enjoy Your New Etched Glasses.
I made some simple light up coasters (perhaps another instructables tutorial for the future) which really makes the etching stand out.
These glasses are easy to make and would make great gifts.
