DIY Customizable Envelopes (Size A2)

You may be looking for the perfectly coordinated envelope for that special note or invitation, or you may have just realized that you are completely out of envelopes and that item needs to be in the mail ASAP. Either way, this DIY envelope is fast, easy, and perfect for your envelope needs!

Only very basic materials are needed for this project!

• Printable Envelope template included with this Instructable (See step 2)
• 8 1/2 by 11 inch sheet of paper
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Glue (I prefer using a glue stick)

Print out the A2 envelope template. (A2 envelopes are a standard envelope size and are 4 3/8 inches by 5 3/4 inches. Standard size means standard postage!) If you are in a hurry, feel free to skip the tracing step (Step 3) and just cut out the envelope along the solid black line and use it to make your envelope.

If you want to trace the envelope onto another kind of paper or use it for multiple envelopes, I recommend printing on card stock for a sturdier template.

Cut out the template along the solid, black line.

Next, choose what paper you would like to use for your envelope. It needs to be roughly 8 1/2 by 11 inches to fit the template.

The options are endless and basically any paper will do, from plain printer paper to paper bags to wrapping paper. I like to use brown kraft paper because I always have scraps lying around from other projects and also, I think brown paper envelopes are ridiculously cute.

Using a pencil, trace your template onto your chosen paper, then cut it out along that line.

Following the dotted line guides on the A2 Envelope Template, first fold the side flaps of the envelope, then fold the top and bottom flaps of the envelope.

If your envelope is just how you want it, then skip this step and go to the next, "Glue It and Use It."

If you'd like to add a contrasting interior to your envelope, read on!

Using your folded envelope as a pattern, trace the outline of the envelope with all the flaps folded down except the top flap. Cut out the resulting shape, making sure to cut JUST INSIDE the line you drew. (If you don't, it will be just LARGER than your envelope and will keep it from folding nicely.)

Unfold the bottom and side flaps and glue the contrasting paper into the envelope.

Finally, use your glue stick to put a thin line of glue along the two side edges of the bottom flap. Fold it up and press hard to adhere it to the side flaps of the envelope.

Your envelope is ready!

When you're ready to send it, simply use a light line of glue along the edge of the top flap to seal it shut and send it on its way.
