DIY Hoodie W/ Face Shield Attachment
Face shields can be an additional layer of protection against COVID-19, along with wearing a face mask, practicing safe social distancing and washing your hands regularly. You frequently see frontline health workers practicing this. However, when wearing a face shield, there is a strap that wraps around your head to keep the shield in place. Since these frontline workers have to wear their shields for extended periods of time, discomfort around the skull results in this action. To solve this, I created a comfortable substitute to the traditional face mask.
Supplies
- Hoodie, however, any clothing with a hood attached will suffice
- Plastic face shield (13 inches as either the length or width)
- At least 2 feet of clear, packaging tape
- 13 inches worth of masking tape
- A ruler or measuring tape
Hot tip: Although using an actual face shield is highly recommended, if no face shield is available, transparent and durable plastics sheets work as a substitute. These substitutes include binder dividers and clear plastic folders.
Grab Your Hoodie
First, obtain a hoodie that you would like to have your face shield attached to. This could be anything from the oversized university hoodies to the hood of your Nike Zip-up Jacket; so long as the hood itself comfortably fits on your head, the piece of clothing you use doesn’t matter.
Attach the Masking Tape to the Hood
Place the masking tape on the edge of your clothing’s hood, with the tape being centered at the hood’s seams (labeled in the picture on the top left). This will serve as the foundation for the material that will connect the face shield to the hood.
Packaging Tape Cylinders
Cut out a strip of clear packaging that is 1 inch in length.
Packaging Tape Cylinders (continued)
Fold the tap strip onto itself to make it a cylinder.
Packaging Tape Cylinders (continued)
Place the folded tape strip on the top of your face shield where it measures 13 inches in length.
Attach Cylinders to Face Shield
Repeat steps 3 - 5 until the top of the face shield is lined with tape from edge to edge, as shown on the bottom left image.
Attach the Face Shield to the Hood
Attach the taped part of your face shield to the masking tape foundation we applied to the hoodie. Be sure that both the masking tape foundation lines up with the face shield!
