DIY Moving Truck

Renting a moving truck is down right expensive (~$300). Renting a trailer is also expensive(~$200). So I decided to think outside the box and turn my truck temporarily into a small moving truck. It is by far the cheapest way to move in one trip granted you have a truck. I had more than enough room to move all the things I owned (minus a bed and boxspring) without the need for any additional resources from a rental company. Total cost: ~$55 for all the wood, hardware and metal brackets.

Additionally, once I was done moving I easily dissembled the enclosure and used the wood, hardware and metal to make other future projects.

1) Measure the length and width of your truck bed (Mine happened to be 71.5" x 54")

2) Choose a desired height for your moving truck storage enclosure (I happened to choose 40" from the floor of my truck bed)

3) As seen in the photos I used 24" metal brackets as a connective structure to my truck bed. I placed the metal brackets into the built-in truck rack slots in my truck bed and bolted them in.

4) Cut wood sides that overhang the interior sides of the truck bed, so as to wedge the truck bed side between the wood sides and metal bracket.

5) Use three 3" metal bolts on each corner of the truck bed to connect the metal brackets to the wood sides . Tighten them down with nylon bolts.

6) Once these sides are up, it's time to create the wood skeleton using 2" x 4" s.

1) Build structural skeleton using 2" x 4"s to connect the two pre-existing wood sides and provide structural support for the top, back and front pieces of plywood.

1) Screw on the roof and back pieces of plywood. Once those are locked in you have a fully enclosed moving truck!

2) Now, fill the truck up with your stuff.

3) Place the back plywood on either with hinges or simply by screwing it in. For me I just "screwed the thing" shut, once I was done packing her up.

4) Lastly, use some tie downs or bungee cords to hold the entire storage enclosure from moving around too much during the vibrations of driving.

Voila! A moving truck!
