DIY Octane Costume (From Apex Legends)

In this instructable I made a character costume from the video game Apex Legends. The character's name is octane and it's super fun to play as him, so why not make him? I got most of my supplies from the nearest dollarama and used a 3D pen to make the mask. You could use a 3D printer to get better results but I used my 3D pen because that is what's available.

Supplies

Materials:

  • Cardboard
  • Duct Tape (Black and Camouflage or green)
  • Glasses(preferably sunglasses)
  • Gloves (preferably fingers gone)
  • Grey shorts
  • Normal mask that fits you
  • Skii mask
  • Knee pads
  • Octane mask
  • Extra skin colored shirt
  • Belt
  • Pockets/bags and accessories on belt
  • Leggings
  • PLA filament

Tools:

  • 3D pen
  • Scissors/blade
  • Pen/pencil
  • Sharpie/Black marker

Mask: Starting the Mask

You can start out by laying the folded mask against paper or cardboard and start tracing it. Once you have the outline done, you can start filling in the space with grey filament. When you have the one side done, you can slowly take it off once it has cooled down, and start filling it in one last time.

You can take it off the paper or cardboard once it has cooled down.

Mask: Teeth and Attaching Mask Pieces

Now you can switch your grey filament for white filament, and start working on the teeth looking design. Where the two pieces will connect, the teeth are a little longer than the rest. When the teeth are done on each side, you can attach the pieces by drawing the melted filament between the two to secure it, with the same shape as the original mask. Make sure to have it open enough for your face to fit in. When cool, add more filament on the seam on the outside and the inside to make it stronger.

Tip: You can cut the top of the mask and make it indented to go around the bottom of your eye. You may need to adjust the teeth and use reference images to get the best results.

Tip: You can use a hair dryer to soften any parts of the mask that need to be adjusted, to make it more comfortable.

Mask: Making and Attaching Respirators

Now we can work on the 3 gas mask respirator cylinders. You will want to start by making a circle and filling it in. Then add a thin border on top around the edge, and a circle in the middle. Then you can make 5 trapezoids evenly spread out from each other (the dark trapezoids are what to fill in). When cooled off, you can flip it over. Start making a border on top of the circle higher and build up a width of about a centimetre. Repeat three times.

For the side respirators, you can stick them on the mask, the same way you attached them to mask pieces together (apply a thin layer of melted plastic on the bottom of the respirator to attach). For the center respirator, you want to place it on the center, and on the sides, produce plastic on it and drag it straight down to the mask. You have to do this a lot on each side until you can't see the inside.

When the mask is done, add string or mask ear bands to the mask.

Tip: You can cut of ear bands from old masks.

Tip: For placing the respirators in the right position, USE REFERENCE IMAGES!

Shopping!

Shopping! To stay on a low budget, go to a cheap store. I went to Dollarama because it is close and affordable. When you are shopping, you will want to be looking for the following (unless you already have it):

  • Duct Tape (Black and Camouflage)
  • Sunglasses)
  • Gloves (preferably fingers gone)
  • Grey shorts
  • 2 masks that fit you
  • Skii mask (black)
  • Knee pads
  • Skin colored shirt over normal shirt
  • Belt
  • Pockets/bags and accessories on belt
  • Leggings

Usually Dollarama has all of these items but you may have to find them somewhere else. We already had some of the items which really helped.

Making a Vest

To make an easy and cheap vest, you want a large enough box to be able to wear it.

  1. Put it on and draw circles where your arms and head will fit.
  2. Cut large ovals where the circles are.
  3. Trim the bottom of the box so it only goes down to the bottom of your rib cage.
  4. Cover the entire thing in camo or green duck tape.
  5. Glue or tape pockets (or fake ones) to the chest of the vest.
  6. Wear or attach a peach skin colored shirt to the vest.
  7. Use a sharpie to draw abs onto the shirt.

Shorts

This is a really simple step. With the grey shorts that you have, use some black or green duck tape and make four lines on the shorts according to the reference image.

Assembly!

Now that you have each step completed, you can put it all on!

Put on the ski mask and the glasses and the Octane mask. The vest and the peach shirt. The gloves, the shorts and the leggings. And finally the belt. You can put pockets and attachments on the belt if you would like.

Now go trick or treating with your friends, and enjoy!
