DIY Repurposed Glass Bottles

An easy and and cheap DIY project to turn those empty glass bottles into something awesome!

Have in mind what kind of bottles you will be using in this project. This project can work with a range of glass bottles from cheap liquor bottles to expensive wine bottles.

You will need:
• empty, and cleaned glass bottles
• glass cutter
• candles
• sand paper
• matches and or lighter
• safety goggles
• work gloves
• plastic bucket big enough to submerge bottle in ice cold water
• patience and a pair of steady hands

Before getting straight to cutting, take into consideration that you have very fragile materials. To ensure best results, sketch a wine/glass bottle as a template and sketch your cuts on there. Creativity is a key element here during this process.

The easiest cuts to make are the cuts that go across the circumference of the bottle. You can keep the bottle as long or as short as you want. Once you are happy with your final sketch, you can move on to the next step.

Take into consideration the body of the glass itself. This project will be hard or easy depending on the types of glass bottles that you use. The easiest types of glasses to use are empty beer bottles. If you want to make a cup, you should use a beer bottle. In our other example, we made a vase from a vodka bottle. For the glass bottles, you just want to add enough pressure to scratch the surface of the glass. If you add too much pressure, you will most likely crack the glass.

For the vodka bottle, you will need to add some pressure to to the thickness of the glass. Try to get your cuts as straight as possible. One helpful way way to ensure clean starlight cuts, is to line the traces with two layers of masking tape. Another tip is to ensure that there is no dirtier dust on the bottle, the best way to get rid of the dirt is to wash the bottle with warm soapy water.

For best results, try to be in an open area where people would not be injured if the glass were to break. For best results, use candles similar to the picture in step 1. Light the candles with a lighter and let burn for a couple of seconds. Lower the glass just close enough to the flame for the tip of the flame and the cut touch without the flame wrapping around the bottle.

This is the key part into making this project a success. It is very important that that the whole cut is submerged in water. If it is not, the whole bottle will not cut properly. Make sure that the water is as cold as you can get it. Let the bottle sit for a coup,e of seconds that then lightly tap the bottom and the bottle will separate (hopefully) with a clean cut. Or you can just pour cold water on the heated cut while simultaneously spinning the bottle.
