DIY Ruby Slippers

Planning a Wizard of Oz themed costume for Halloween this year? Finding certain pieces of a costume is sometimes easier said than done, so why not just make it yourself? In this Instructable, you'll learn how to make your own pair of Dorothy's Ruby Slippers!

Once you have your materials, this project is relatively quick! Set aside approximately 45 minutes to finish the shoes, and then allow a whole day for them to fully dry.

The first thing to do is gather your materials.

If you have a pair of old flats that you no longer wear, and don't mind re-purposing, then you're already one step ahead! Otherwise, going to a local thrift store or used clothing store is going to be the most inexpensive option.

Once you have a pair of shoes, you only need to get loose glitter, ModPodge, and a paintbrush, all of which you can find at almost any craft store.

Materials List:

1. Pair of Shoes

2. Red Loose Glitter

3. ModPodge (It doesn't make a difference whether you use Matte or Gloss)

4. Paintbrush

5. A work surface that you don't mind covering in glitter, or that you can clean easily. Laying down newspaper or butcher paper works well, and then you can just pick it up and dispose of it.

1. Make sure that your shoes are clean before beginning, and then dip your paintbrush in the ModPodge and apply generous, but even, strokes on a 2-3 inch section of your first shoe.

2. Once you've applied ModPodge to a small part of the shoe, begin sprinkling your loose glitter over it until it sticks. Apply the glitter until you can no longer see the material of the shoe underneath, and then gently shake off the remaining glitter.

3. Repeat these steps until the whole shoe is covered in glitter.

1. If you find that there are spots on your shoes that have less glitter, it is okay to apply more ModPodge over the top of the already existing glitter, and then continue to add glitter.

2. For the full effect of a Ruby Slipper, make sure that any sparse spots are filled in and that the original material of the shoe is not visible.

One finished Ruby Slipper, and one plain flat!

Once you've applied enough glitter and feel satisfied with your finished product, make sure to give your shoes plenty of time to dry. ModPodge is known for staying tacky for quite some time, so I would suggest letting the glitter set for approximately 24 hours before wearing.
