DIY Victoria's Secret Ruched Hiphugger Panties
Victoria's Secret Ruched Hiphugger Panties are one of my favorite underwear styles. They give a simple hip-hugger or boy-short pattern a cute twist. I will teach you an easy way to make your own ruched panties. The pair I made for this tutorial is for ruched-front hip-hugger panties, but this also works to make a ruched-back panty, thongs, bikini's, etc...
Materials
Main Materials
- Lycra/Cotton Fabric Blend - about 30" x 20" worth
- Elastic - thin piece of elastic (mine was 1/8" width) and 1.5" in length. The length also depends on how much rouching you want.
- Sewing Machine (I used a serger as well, but this can all be done on a sewing machine)
- Stretch Needle (for sewing machine) - this is necessary for properly sewing lycra/spandex fabrics
- Thread
- Needle - for sewing by hand
- Pins
Cut Pattern
As I said before you can use this technique for any style of underwear. I chose to make hiphuggers. You can download the pattern I made in a PDF. This pattern piece is for both the front and back pieces.
Fold the fabric over and place the edge of the pattern marked "place on edge" on the folded edge. Pin the pattern to the fabric and cut out leaving about 1/2 inch from the edge of the pattern. Repeat this for your second pattern piece.
**Since I have the original pattern piece I didn't need to place it on the edge of the fabric.

Finish Edges
To finish the edges of the underwear you will need to fold over all the exposed edges twice. See image below to know what edges to fold over.
Since I have a Serger, instead of folding the exposed edges over twice, I serged the edges then folded them over once and sewed them down using a zig-zag stitch.
If you don't have a serger, fold the exposed edges over once and sew them down using a zig-zag stitch. Fold the edges down again and sew them down using a zig-zag stitch.

Ruch Panties
Decide what side you want to ruche. I ruched the front of mine, but you can do either side!
Find the center of the panties by folding them in half and placing a pin vertically on the folded edge. This is just to mark the center; don't pin the sides together.
Cut a small piece of elastic 1.5" in length.
*** For these next few steps I did this all by hand which I found the easiest ***
Sew one end of the elastic to the top center edge of the panties where the pin is marking sew(see image). Sew the other end along the center line but 2.5" lower then the other edge. Since 2.5" is longer than the elastic your underwear fabric will bunch (this is what we want!)
Use your fingers to pinch (bundle) together small parts of the fabric that is between the two ends of the elastic. Sew several bundles of pinched fabric to the elastic to create a ruched effect.

Sew Pieces Together
Sew the side edges and crotch pieces together and you're all done!!
