DIY Wine Bottle Tiki Torch

Have an outdoor space that could use some help with lighting and ambiance? Is your back porch full of pesky bugs?

This DIY glass bottle torch is inexpensive, easy to make, and will be the focal point of every outdoor space. Not only does it save the planet by using something that would otherwise end up in the waste bin, but it also keeps the buzzing critters out of sight and out of mind.

SAFETY!

Since this project involves the use of fuel and fire, make sure you are taking safety precautions into account. This including having a fire extinguisher near at all times and lighting the torch only once you are in an open outdoor space.

Gather Materials and Tools

Tiki Torch:

1. ANY glass bottle with 1" diameter neck

2. Bottle of Citronella torch fuel ($10.00)

3. Electrical tape

4. 1/2" x 3/8" copper coupling w/ cap ($2.00)

5. Tiki wick or rope ($4.00)

Mounting Supplies (Optional):

1. 1 x 1" split ring hanger ($2.00)

2. 2 x 3/4" hex nuts ($0.40 each)

3. 1 x 6" metal rod, threaded 3/8" ($1.00)

4. 2 x 10" x 1" screws ($0.35 each)

5. 1 x Ceiling Flange, threaded 3/8" ($1.00)

Tools:

1. Funnel

2. Drill/Screwdriver

Assembling the Torch

Wrap the tape around the wide end of the coupling until it fits snugly in the neck of the bottle.

Thread the wick through the coupling, with about 2" sticking through the smaller end.

Fill the bottle with the torch fuel -- small pebbles can be added to the bottle to use less fuel. Fill the bottle several inches from the top.

Put the long end of the wick and the taped half of the coupling into the neck of the bottle. Let the wick absorb the fuel. (~20 minutes)

Screw the top plate connector onto any wooden surface.

Thread the two hex nuts onto both ends of the rod.

Screw the rod into the center of the top plate connector.

Screw the split ring hanger onto the other end of the rod.

Open the split ring hanger, insert the wine bottle and refasten the hanger.
